Browse what many job board industry experts say today and you'll get many who agree the industry is changing rapidly. Most agree that the realistic price to post a job ad on a job site is declining. The days of charging $250 to $800 to post a single job ad are dying.

For nonprofits, especially, how money is spent is under constant scrutiny.

With so many other options today, like social media, job sites (especially niche ones) still play a critical role in recruiting. At WorkCabin.ca, we've long focused on affordable posting rates: $35 for a nonprofit job ad, and $55 for commercial job ad.

WorkCabin has scored a nice little achievement, reaching No. 21 on NetworkedBlogs' best enevironmental blogs. NetworkedBlogs is one of many tools that WorkCabin uses to promote clients' environmental job postings. WorkCabin is the only Canadian site to be in the latest top-50 ranking for 'environmental' by NetworkedBlog.

At WorkCabin.ca, we attract only quality job postings and leading employers. Positions must be career-track in quality, or be contributing toward a career-track. What does career-track mean? It means that the position affords the opportunity for a sustainable career and/or potential for contributing to advancement within a quality environmental employment sector.

At WorkCabin we have nothing against dishwasher jobs, or chalet cooking jobs, but this is not what WorkCabin.ca is about. WorkCabin is a paid service. This weeds out those looking to post free listings for dishwashers. WorkCabin is not a free posting job site or pay-what-you-can site that allows free posting.

WorkCabin is visited daily by qualified professionals who have come to know our site as the source for quality postings.

One thing we consistently hear from employers today is this: They do not want to be flooded wth resumes. Instead, organizations want qualified applicants. That's where the EcoTalent Optmizer helps.

This unique new tool at WorkCabin.ca allows empoyers to create pre-interview type questions that help filter applicants. A simple question question may be, for example, Do you have at least 3 to 5 years of field experience working in remote wilderness locations? This might be a filter questions for organizations looking for field technicians for a wildlife study job.

Applicants screening is a key tool that innovative and progressive job sites use today to help organizations recruit more efficiently. You will not find applicant screening tools at inferior, outdated job boards that refuse to invest any significant capital in being innovative

The Internet is littered with inferior job boards. Such boards swipe job listings from newsletters, industry sites, listserves, etc., and then repost them without permission. Employers frequently discover that their environmental job ad has been poached. We hear this complaint on a regular basis from our clients. Our advice is always the same: notify the job board that it is unauthorized to host the position and demand that it be removed immediately.

Reputable, professional job sites do not swipe listings from newsletters, email lists and industry sites. Professional job sites don't need to do this because they have brand reputation. Leading employers choose to use these services. These are the job sites that employers want to see applicants applying from.

Users always know they can apply with confidence to job postings found at WorkCabin.ca. The job ads you see have been posted by employers. That means employers want (and are on the look out for) applicants via WorkCabin.

Tips for spotting professional job sites:

  • Most reputable job sites offer some form of professional resume storage and database searching
  • Advanced HR tools and applicant tracking systems
  • Tools to help employers go beyond a job posting to attract the right candidates
  • Reputable employers use the job site
  • Multiple, professional ways to be notified of new job listings
  • Custom web development and obvious signs of significant investment
  • Professional, on-site payment gateway, or Virtual Terminal capability to accept and process credit card payments via phone
  • Use of professional, credible, paid email marketing services for e-newsletters (these services have agreements with IPs to ensure measured deliverability success rates as high as 98%)

Tips for spotting inferior job boards

  • Many, many job listings all appear to get posted at the same time each day (a sign the listings may be swiped from newsletters, industry sites, etc., and are being posted all at once = potential unauthorized site to host the jobs)
  • Lack of quality job postings
  • Lack of reputable employers
  • Messy appearance and obvious lack of any innovation or investment
  • Usually use email marketing techniques 'on the cheap' (ie. outdated free listserves, or free email delivery services that offer no measurable tracking for deliverability and are notorious for being flagged as spam by IPs)

Welcome to our all-new website, or as we affectionately call it, WorkCabin 3.0. It's our biggest web development initiative since we launched Canada's Environmental Jobs Site in 2007.

As many of you of you might know, we have spent the past five months embarking on a large-scale investment to significantly enhance WorkCabin.ca. Our goal has been to introduce many new tools and features to ensure our service is remaining progressive in the hyper-active technology era. The mission was simple: build an even better environmental jobs site.

For us, it was especially important to make a significant investment to further develop our green jobs site to help employers and candidates. After all, we're part of the eco community advocating investment in green jobs to build a more sustainable future. To not invest ourselves would be hypocritical.

With this launch, we've evolved to be about more than just green jobs listings. We've added a pro-grade resume database, resume and cover letter creation tools, social media link integration into resumes, online applying, applicant screening, enhanced mobile-dedicated website, customizeable employer pages, searchable employer directory, and much more.

And, yes, we're still focused on offering everyday affordable rates so every organization can afford to use an advanced, value-added recruiting service to attract the right candidates. Our a la carte approach to pricing means you can build the solution that best works for you.
