rare Charitable Research Reserve

Job Description

The rare Charitable Research Reserve is a 900+ acre urban land trust and environmental institute in Waterloo Region/ Wellington.  Since inception, rare has taken care of the land on behalf of the community through the use of Western tools in conservation, research and education. As rare becomes engaged in reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (North America), these pillars will equally include and value Indigenous ways of knowing and being — to become three strands of a strong braid. Together we will steward these lands with respect for generations past, present and those yet to come, intact in perpetuity with trees more than 250 years old, 24 habitat types, and 6 of 8 pre-settlement landscapes.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with an agricultural, horticultural or environmental background and degree along with some hands on gardening/farming life experience.

The Heritage Landscapes Intern will be reporting to the Property, Facilities, and Gardens Coordinator, but will also work collaboratively with the Educators, our Conservation team, staff and volunteers in order to assist in the effective and safe operation of all of rare’s gardens, a position that acknowledges the role of the community in all the garden areas of the property.  The gardens at rare give prominence to native plants and sustainable practices, including organics.

The tasks of the Heritage Landscapes Intern will include:

-Maintenance of native plant gardens and grasses around the historic 1800s farmhouse and limestone slit barn and landscape conservation at the 1837 stage coach inn including creation of a new native plant garden

-Assisting the  garden team with maintenance of 15,000 sq ft organic vegetable garden

-Care of fruit orchard garden, watering and fertilizing throughout the season

-Creating an interpretive program for the fruit orchard

-Conceptual Longhouse maintenance, including correcting the placement of longhouse posts that shift over winter to their original design, grass care around the structure and stone hearth fire pit;

-Creating an interpretive program for the Conceptual Longhouse and speak to visitors about the conceptual longhouse and the traditional Indigenous territory of the site;

-Assisting with teaching students and summer campers about gardening;

-Assisting with the organization and delivery of public workshops related to the natural and heritage values of the site;

-Writing of blog entries on the natural and heritage values of the site, and gathering other information and photographs for social media
