Thompson Rivers University (TRU) invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair, a tenure track or tenured position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the area of Fire Ecology.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program as a means of enabling Canadian universities to sustain leading edge research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University’s Strategic Research Plan, identifying Sustainability, the Environment, and the Physical World as priority areas.
Wildfire is an historic driver of ecosystem development in the Interior of British Columbia. BC’s Interior has adapted to centuries of fire cycles; however, human-caused events over the past 100 years have shifted the natural fire cycle. Increased wildland fire research and applied research in the fields of ecology, fire science, social science and economics have been identified as both provincial and University priorities. Together with UNBC and UBCO, as part of the Interior Universities Research Coalition, TRU is committed to providing up-to-date, BC-focused research as the basis for land management decisions and strategies, community resilience, and effective disaster response.
The Faculty of Science boasts a distinguished history of excellent teaching and world-class research. It offers a wide array of undergraduate certificate, diploma, and degree programs in pure and applied science. As well, it offers a Master of Science in Environmental Science and anticipates approval of a new Master of Science in Data Science. The Faculty prides itself on producing graduates who are knowledgeable and skilled problem solvers, those who carry out research that is important to the environment and sustainability.
The CRC’s research program should have a focus on one or more of the following areas:
- the historical role of fire in maintaining grassland/steppe ecosystems;
the Indigenous knowledge of fire as a tool to manage dry ecosystems;
the role of anthropogenic activities role in wildfire frequency / intensity;
how climate change affects cyclical events leading to wildfire;
modelling predictors of fire risk and frequency.
The CRC in Fire Ecology will have significant opportunities for collaborative research with TRU’s NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Restoration and Reclamation, TRU’s Canada Research Chair in Non-linear Applied Mathematics, TRU’s BC Regional Innovation Chair in Cattle Industry Sustainability, and BC Regional Innovation Chair in Indigenous Health. In addition, TRU has strong research programs and collaboration possibilities in Ecology and Environmental Biology and the Natural Resource Sciences. The Chair would be expected to develop strong relationships with relevant government and non-governmental agencies.
The successful candidate must have:
- a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline awarded within the past 10 years;
- relevant research experience at a post-doctoral level;
- experience with the development of a successful independent research program;
- potential to secure significant external funding.
Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the Spring of 2020. If the successful candidate satisfies the specific eligibility conditions of the program, the candidate may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier II Canada Research Chair, which provides significant protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment. The final appointment will be conditional on a successful nomination. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applicants must be exceptional emerging world-class scholars who have demonstrated particular research creativity, have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; and, as chairholders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers.
Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. - a detailed curriculum vitae (including examples of significant research contributions)
- a detailed description of the applicant’s proposed original five-year research program envisioned for the Tier II chair and its potential to attract funding; a statement on the potential program can contribute to (1) TRU’s strategic research directions, (2) student training and other impacts on the broader community; and a statement on applicant’s strengths and experiences in increasing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in previous institutional environment
- a teaching statement that documents the applicant’s experience in and approach to training and mentoring diverse students and includes the applicant’s teaching philosophy
- samples of relevant published writing or other relevant materials
- the names and contact information of three referees
