CDC Program Ecologist
$69,900.80 – $79,791.25 annually plus 3.3% Temporary Market Adjustment Rates effective April 14, 2019

Housed within the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy, Ecosystems Branch, the BC Conservation Data Centre (BC CDC) supports the conservation of our province’s biodiversity by collecting and sharing scientific data and information about species and ecosystems in BC.

The CDC Program Ecologist is responsible for assisting in setting the strategic direction of the CDC Ecology unit, supervising Ecology unit staff, overseeing the development of the CDC list of Ecological Communities, participating in provincial, national and international vegetation classification correlations, assigning conservation status ranks that reflect the risk of community collapse, mapping of ecological community occurrences, and the compilation, analyses, and maintenance of data and information on ecological communities in British Columbia from multiple sources.

Qualifications for this role include:

·         MSc or PhD in the field of vegetation or forest ecology (or related field) with at least three (3) years’ directly related experience; OR

·         BSc in the field of vegetation or forest ecology (or related field) with at least five (5) years’ *directly related experience.

·         Registered OR *immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in BC with the College of Applied Biology (CAB).

·         Experience using ecological characteristics to define ecosystems of BC and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of the province’s floristic, climatic, geographic, geomorphologic, and abiotic diversity leading to the diversity in ecological communities found throughout the province.

·         Experience (minimum 2 years) in the identification of terrestrial ecosystems in the field, by collecting field sample data and using available imagery (air photos, LIDAR, etc.) to map the ecosystems.

·         Experience (minimum 3 years) planning, directing and organizing own work, and providing professional and technical direction to other staff and contractors.
