Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Director of Development to create and implement development strategies, including prospect research, donor relations, monthly donor campaigns and other fundraising outreach via our social media, email, and other communications channels. In addition to grant research and writing, the successful candidate will employ a clear tracking process to ensure that the organization has sufficient resources to fund our operations annually and for growth. The Director of Development will work with other members of our team including the executive director, finance staff, programs coordinator, and communications staff.

Term: 6-month initial contract
Under the direction of: Executive Director


  • Be able to communicate our organization’s mission, campaigns and projects to funders in the context of current events in politics and the environment in British Columbia.
  • Evaluate development and fundraising strategies previously and currently in use by our organization in the context of our current fundraising goals and capacity.
  • Work with our team to develop short and long-range strategic plans including strategies to encourage new or increased funding, in particular increasing our monthly donor base and developing a calendar for fundraising outreach through social media, email, and print mail based on best practices.Track and report outcomes of various tactics and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Direct and work with other team members in the implementation of fundraising strategies involving public outreach and communications with our followers and donor base that maximize the potential of our visual storytelling assets.
  • Work with campaign partners on joint outreach and fundraising initiatives.
  • Research new prospects and maintain relationships with new and established funding partners, including granting foundations, 3rd party fundraising entities, large and small donors.
  • Conduct the full range of grant activities including preparing, submitting, coordinating and stewarding grant proposals to foundation, corporate and government sources, including budgets, newsletter and other written updates, and reports. Understand and clearly articulate outcomes in plain language writing.
  • Develop individual grant proposals, updates, and reports in accordance with each grant-making organization’s guidelines and timelines, coordinating with finance and operations other team members to ensure that budgets, statements, and outcomes are accurate, and products are delivered on time.
  • Keep excellent records of all contacts and fundraising activity using our Salesforce database.


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in marketing, communication, public relations, business or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience in development, marketing, public relations, annual, corporate or foundation giving.
  • Proven track record of closing a variety of gifts, grant, and proposal writing.
  • Experience with developing and executing successful fundraising strategies for new media.
  • Must be a self-starter, self-motivated and self-directed, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Must be willing to work collaboratively and to take direction and constructive feedback from various sources.
  • Solid visual, verbal, and written communication skills, including writing, editing and proofreading; ability to adopt our brand and communication styles, and to adapt writing styles to fit the audience and voice of the piece.
  • Ability to work remotely with other team members, mainly by email and phone. The position involves significant time spent at a computer/desk, occasional travel, and some evening and weekend commitments
  • Ability to work with a diverse cross-section of the public, from grassroots activists to corporate executives to elders to children and teachers, and everything in between.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capacity to manage and organize confidential information.
  • Experience in a non-profit setting is strongly preferred, as is a passion for and knowledge of environmental conservation.
  • Commitment to Pacific Wild’s mission and goals and ability to work within our protocol agreements with partner First Nations is required.
