Job Description

THE CENTRE
The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is an aquarium and learning centre focused solely on the Salish Sea Bioregion. Its mission is to create experiences that engage people to learn about, explore, and conserve the Salish Sea Bioregion. Located on the waterfront in Sidney B.C. it is the home to 3,000 sea creatures representing 160 species. Annually 75,000 + visitors are served by 17 staff members and 170 volunteers.
The Centre is in a mature phase of development which requires ongoing refreshment of the visitor experience. Its annual operating budget is in the order of $1m with revenues earned through admissions, retail sales, education programs and facility rentals supplemented by a variety of grants and donations. The Town of Sidney provides considerable support for this significant tourist attraction. The Centre is owned and operated by the not-for-profit New Marine Centre Society, which has in excess of 8,000 members. The Executive Director reports to the Society’s Board of Directors.
THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced, inspiring and visionary leader who can effectively contribute to and enact the Centre’s strategic vision, engage and develop staff and volunteers as the Centre evolves, and create a solid and sustainable framework for success, now and into the future.
An effective leader in this position will apply their exceptional business acumen to financial planning and management, prioritizing the allocation of resources, developing the leadership team and entrusting them with key deliverables. Drawing on superior influencing skills, they will engage and appreciate both staff and volunteers as critical contributors to the creation of memorable experiences for visitors, and communicate effectively with internal, external and Board stakeholders.
Drawing on their experiences in the not-for-profit sector the Executive Director will guide and support the team to grow the Centre’s revenue base through developing new and enhancing existing products and services, maximizing grant opportunities and strengthening donations support.
The Executive Director will execute the mission of the Centre in consultation and collaboration with our team, partners and diverse stakeholders; will be confident in delivering on the mission, upholding the values of the Centre, and promoting its value to the community.
