Outdoor and Sustainability Educator
Job Type: Seasonal contractor with potential into a permanent position
Position Benefits: This unique role offers flexibility in lifestyle giving opportunities to live on purpose with remote contracts living your dreams during the off-seasons (September-March). Time Commitment: A 3-day training will commence end of March.

Scheduling: Start times are fixed with varying end times. Shifts range from 4-12 hours per day.
$250 flat daily rate (7-10hrs)
$125 flat half day rate (3-6hrs)
flat case by case project-based rate (contract work)
Position description: Imagine leading school groups on their first experiences of Canadian society, the spectacular natural beauty of Vancouver British Columbia’s – forests, mountains and sea, its schools and how we collectively tackle a more sustainable world. Explore Vancouver’s diverse culture with them while navigating these waters while touring a range of natural and human spaces that show the challenges and opportunities for sustainability. Using leading educational resources, your diverse skill set and your warm, direct manner – coordinate and deliver fun, engaging hands-on lessons on leading sustainability practices and thinking, and challenges students to take action for the future – today. Foster leadership skills and build student confidence and capacity through team building, individual reflection and support and a good dose of humor. Support students develop action plans for school and community on their return helping them move unsustainable practices to a zero-waste and zero-emissions society. Tour destinations include the Sunshine Coast, North shore mountains, City of Vancouver sites, local schools and universities. Working closely with a small core team (a tour and logistics manager and the SBT co-founder) to bring vision to reality, this position offers an opportunity to build upon your experiences, help shape a program and deliver a set of powerful learning opportunities on the sea, in the forest and in the city. Organization Overview: Study Buddy Tours (SBT) is a small Vancouver, Canada based tour operator with over 20 years of experience delivering educational tours for international students. SBT strives to contribute to more sustainable and resilient communities through travel programs that educate and empower youth to take action locally with a global effect. SBT prides itself on ethical practice and provides full service tour programs for students which include high-quality programming along with accommodation, food, educational activities, transportation from pick up to drop off at the Vancouver International Airport. SBT strives to create experiences for youth to become internationally employable sustainability leaders. SBT programs supports international students ages 11-17, to experience Western society and sustainability goals in the context of higher education opportunities in Vancouver, BC during their summer holidays (April-August). We believe that applying a sustainability lens to students’ daily tasks, pushing their comfort zones, and helping them reevaluate what’s important and creating opportunities for them to feel empowered helps them grow their own sustainable practices and vision. Tackling larger sustainability questions as we tour both natural and institutional settings help acknowledge limitations and opportunities of our everyday choices, and the need to practice leadership skills to raises our individual and collective resilience. An attitude of doing what it takes to serve the greater good – while having fun – is a key characteristic and value set of SBT.
SBT’s core team consists of Kim Carvajal, co-founder and business manager of Study Buddy Tours, and a Program Manager who handles detailed logistics, tour transportation and facility coordination. Our business is growing, incorporating and developing volunteer and work experience opportunities on zero-waste and climate action.
Candidate Description: You are a passionate educator who loves of travel, the outdoors and working closely with people and feel naturally part of the nucleus of a community. As a great role model to youth with diverse experience promoting outdoors skills and sustainability education you are driven, confident and comfortable working with diverse groups. You have years of international travel experience, knowledgeable, well-organized and love to engage with share your inspiration with and others. You have a special talent implementing program objectives while navigating unexpected changes smoothly and effectively. You are able to deliver and manage planned place-based activities on set timelines with a range of age groups while keeping youth engaged, well supported and staying responsive to group and individual needs. The ideal candidate embodies an empathetic connection and creates safe and transformative experiences at various outdoor and indoor locations through smooth delivery and an eye for the “teachable moment”. Being reliable, punctual, and having strong critical problem-solving skills are key attributes for this position. The ideal candidate is driven, enthusiastic, curious and open-minded. The chosen candidate for this position will be SBT’s main educator supporting program delivery in April, May, June, July and August of 2019. We see this position growing into a full-time position with contribution towards developing new programs and communications to support marketing to build revenue/team/power/culture in 2020.
Education and Experience:
· BC Teaching Certificate preferred
· 2 or more years working with youth in educational supportive settings
· Minimum 1 year of teaching or working with youth abroad
· Minimum of 2 years teaching outdoor education with youth
Current First Aid/CPR certification
Standard Wilderness First Aid
· IB and AP graduate and IB teaching experience preferred
All candidates are required to submit a current criminal record check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate, speak/instruct clearly and effectively with students.
Has demonstrated experience in youth development, relationship building, and group management.
Has Strong group facilitation skills
Values autonomy with the ability to exceed timeline and deliverable expectations
Has recent experience working with Youth 11-17 in age
Has Knowledge of the Greater Vancouver transit system, routing and schedules
Is Bi or multilingual.
Interest in Photography/storytelling to capture moments and facilitate social media campaigns
· Implement programs based on age and learning outcomes drawing from a set of comprehensive resources
· Encourage forest play, hiking while ensuring safety near bodies of water, streams and other terrain of concern
· Ensure the daily preparation of learning areas and materials
· Assume overall responsibility for program tools and equipment, to include safety, use, and maintenance
· Plan, prepare, and co-create activities to support community projects abroad
· Implement mentorship strategies that are individually focused and age appropriate, with an emphasis on compassion and respect
· Meet at location or partner with tour manager (logistics & meal coordination) to educate group while in transit
· Create certificates of completion for each participant
· Complete a summary report of each participant for their parent
· Possible remote contracts include: education focused communications via blogs/print media/digital media, develop report cards & surveys, measuring effectiveness tools, planning activities, creating camp-learning days, create strategic partnerships, build strategies to recruit students, ambassadors, speakers.
