Job Title:  Supervisor Riverview Park & Zoo

Reports to:  Manager Riverview Park & Zoo

Department:  RPZ

Location:  1230 Water St. N., Peterborough

Position Overview


The Park & Zoo Supervisor plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, supervises and evaluates the work of personnel engaged in park and zoo activities. They are responsible for ensuring the efficient execution of Park and Zoo operations as well as the effective maintenance of our grounds, facilities and equipment. The Supervisor is also responsible for the implementation of all aspects the animal wellness program.




Strategic & Planning

Provide input into the development of business plans including significant and ongoing operations and maintenance initiatives, changes and capital projects;
Monitor and keep appraised of legislated changes, assess the impacts of change and communicate as required.
Planning including participating in the development of organizational plans (e.g. animal health, husbandry, enrichment, training, education, maintenance, etc.), assisting with the development of program budgets, and arranging/scheduling program activities.
Operational Management

Plan, schedule, assign and supervise the daily operational and capital work of the Riverview Park and Zoo personnel ensuring activities are in adherence to Company and regulatory standards and that department goals/objectives are met.
Participate in the recruitment, coaching and development of staff to optimize individual and team performance.
Institutional representative for Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species Survival Programs.
Leading the implementation of the animal wellness program in accordance with the animal wellness plan. Coordination of animal care and husbandry activities, overseeing all animal health activities (planned, response-based and emergency).
Arrange and support the Park and Zoo’s placement program for high school, college and university student placements and internships.
Point of contact in the absence of the Manager and Curator.
Promote and participate in the Company’s Health and Safety program through documentation, communication, training and follow-up on all health and safety incidents, and identified hazards.

Ensure that all required administrative support and required documentation is complete and correct with respect to the department functions.
Complete and/or approve staff daily time sheets, purchase requisitions, invoices etc.
Provide and coordinate staff training to ensure safe and efficient performance, and
Other duties as assigned.



Academic and Professional Qualifications:

Specialist/Diverse (University Degree) discipline: Bachelor of Science degree in a related discipline such as animal health, animal care or biological sciences and/or

Advanced (College Diploma, Certificate or Trade ) discipline:   Registered Veterinary Technician preferred.  Post Secondary School diploma or degree in an animal related field eg. Conservation biology, Veterinary Technology, Fish and Wildlife Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience may be considered.





Three (3) years of related work experience in a zoo environment plus three (3) years supervisory experience, preferably in a union environment.


Technical Skills:

Knowledge of wildlife biology, animal health, animal husbandry, and exotic species.
Familiarity with horticulture, groundskeeping, construction and maintenance related to zoos and parks would be an asset.
Working knowledge of teaching principles, techniques and methods in the planning and implementation of educational programs would be an asset.
Demonstrated experience and competency in communications: internal and external correspondence, composition (reports, presentations, department reference documents, etc.) direct interaction with staff, suppliers/contractors, visitors/guests and the media.
Demonstrated working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS.
Excellent working knowledge and experience using MSOffice suite applications.
Demonstrated excellent attendance record.
Valid Class G driver’s licence and good driving record.
Ability to meet the Physical Demands Analysis.
