Duration: Full-time, permanent staff position
Location: Vancouver Island or Lower Mainland (home office). Willing/able to quite regularly travel to the office in Victoria and sites across the province.
Compensation: $55,000-58,000 per annum

The Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA) is a registered non-profit society dedicated to protecting the remarkable and endangered old-growth forests in BC while ensuring a sustainable, second-growth forestry industry. The AFA has grown rapidly since our founding in 2010, reaching international audiences through our hard-hitting advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns. We specialize in public education and mobilization, building alliances with key allies, on-the-ground exploration and documentation of old-growth forests, research, and engaging governments to achieve policy change for BC’s ancient forests. In 2020, the provincial government promised to overhaul BC’s old-growth forest policies and increase their protection. By joining the AFA at this pivotal time, you can be a driver of the new policies that will determine the fate of the remaining endangered old-growth forests in BC.
Position Overview:
The AFA is seeking a person with a passion for ecology and who is a prolific communicator to draft persuasive and highly accurate communications materials in support of our campaign and to contribute to content relating to fundraising. Reporting to the Executive Team and in collaboration with the campaign team, this person will develop and distribute content over a wide range of platforms to raise awareness, educate, and inspire action across our large online audiences, and distribute content to the news media. Participate in developing strategies to reach new audiences. Bring your creative new ideas and tactics to the challenge of elevating AFA’s communications and online engagement to a new level. Use our extensive collection of captivating and professional photos to create compelling digital content and help us track data to improve our campaigns.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft hard-hitting, impactful, engaging, persuasive written materials for campaign activities and fundraising (social media, media releases, calls to action, newsletters, promotional materials etc.) to mobilize citizens, raise awareness, and facilitate policy change.
- Collaboratively plan and implement communications strategies and tactics based on campaign development.
- Oversee AFA’s social media presence across all platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube); Includes:
- Monitoring and sharing emerging news and relevant digital content
- Creating compelling content, including storytelling and social media graphics
- Monitoring accounts, moderating discussions, and managing content
- Collect, analyze, and report out on data related to social media, conversions, website traffic, and e-communications and translate data into tangible improvements.
- Contribute to digital and print communication projects (e.g. brochures, AFA calendar, year-end mail-out, annual activity reports)
- Actively keeps a pulse on campaign developments internal to the organization and externally with developments with governments.
- Get out in the field and explore and document spectacular endangered old-growth forests.
Essential Skills and Aptitudes
- Passionate about old-growth forest conservation
- Understanding of issues related to old-growth forest conservation, BC’s forestry sector,
- Ecology, and relevant BC politics
- Writing abilities with editing and proofreading skills that are highly accurate, prolific, and persuasive.
- Has a talent for strategic storytelling and for making complex ideas understandable, and captivating for a variety of audiences
- Strong ability to adapt tone, language, and style for various mediums (press releases, social media platforms, etc)
- A technical proficiency in a variety of social media platforms.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritize tasks
- Background in journalism an asset
- Fantastic social skills and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities
- Technical skills with Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), social media best practices, and Wordpress is an asset
Experience
- Significant work or volunteer experience working on nature-oriented environmental campaigns.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing communication strategies.
- A background in Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Conservation Biology, Biology, and Forest Sciences is an asset.
