The B.C. Wildlife Federation is pleased to announce this exciting opportunity for you to join our project and make a BIG impact on watershed and wetland health in B.C. The Wetlands Workforce (WW) project will deploy work pods in the field to support the maintenance, monitoring and inventory of restored wetland sites across B.C., engage in planning activities related to the restoration of future wetland restoration sites and inventory of natural wetland sites for the development of better wetland management tools. The WW Project is supported through the Province of BC’s economic stimulus fund and will provide temporary employment for a minimum of 100 people.

This is a full-time, contracted position starting as soon as possible until end of September 2021. Evenings, weekends and/or extended hours may be required to accommodate travel schedules, field placements, training and other events.
The Field Operations Assistant will meaningfully contribute to the health of wetlands in B.C. by directly assisting the Field Crew Supervisor with logistical, administrative, and field support for a wetland surveying project extending across northeastern B.C. The Field Operations Assistant will be involved in coordinating site access and travel to sites, arranging accommodation, communicating with project partners, and managing collected datasets. In addition, this position will involve the collection of ecological and environmental data at a number of wetlands and the operation and maintenance of field equipment including a 4WD truck, drone, and 360° camera for site access and characterization. Other duties and responsibilities may be added throughout the work term, based on project needs.
Work conditions will primarily be outdoors, in various weather conditions throughout the season, with wildlife encounters and insect activity likely. Work can be physically demanding, and applicants should be capable of and prepared to work on their feet for extended periods, in adverse conditions, and to regularly carry loads up to ~22 kg (50lb). In addition, due to the remote nature of some of the field sites, a portion of the applicant’s off-time may be spent in remote settings.

Coordinating site access with industry, private landowners, and members of participating First Nations.
• Scheduling crew accommodations.
• Conducting mapping surveys to contribute to a B.C. Wetland Ecosystems Services Protocol (WESP) and B.C. predictive wetlands map.
• Navigating to field sites using maps and GPS on potentially rough roads (via 4WD truck) and through forested areas (~100 m on foot).
• Caring for and maintaining field equipment.
• Ensuring collected field data is organized and stored safely and accurately.
• Adhering to safety requirements and protocols in the field.
• Respectfully interacting with members of the public, representatives of partnering organizations, private landowners, and members of participating First Nations.
• Promoting a positive work culture among Field Crew members.
• Other duties as directed by the Field Crew Supervisor, Wetlands Assessment & Field Coordinator and Wetlands Workforce Project Manager.
Competencies and Skills
The WW aims to primarily hire those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting economic downturn. Training will be provided to ensure that those unfamiliar with wetland assessments are comfortable and safe in their duties.
• Experience characterizing natural ecosystems is an asset
• Experience working or recreating in a wilderness/ backcountry environment is an asset
• Experience applying and troubleshooting technology in a field setting is an asset
• Experience with safe operation of 4WD trucks is an asset
• Experience with GIS mapping technologies is an asset
• Experience planning and coordinating travel logistics is an asset
• Experience communicating with First Nations and Indigenous communities is an asset
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
