Maritimes Aerial Insectivore Field Technician
Birds Canada is hiring up to 4 experienced, highly-motivated, and personable field staff to assist with the Aerial Insectivore Conservation Program in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (10-15 weeks starting mid-May). The work will involve travel throughout NB and NS to communities that host significant nesting and roosting sites for Chimney Swift, Bank Swallow, and Barn Swallow.
Aerial Insectivore Technicians will report to the Atlantic Aerial Insectivore Conservation Program Coordinator and work with other program staff to assist with all aspects of the programs. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: nest and roost surveys; colony monitoring; data collection and entry; implementing recovery activities; public outreach and education in urban, industrial, and agricultural settings and at special events; volunteer coordination; and public speaking. Technicians must be enthusiastic about respectfully engaging with the public. Technicians must be capable of carrying equipment and walking long distances. Technicians must be comfortable spending long days outdoors in remote, rural, and urban areas. Please note that some preference may be given to those who meet Canada Summer Jobs’ eligibility criteria*.
Under the supervision of the Aerial Insectivore Conservation Coordinator, the technicians will:
· Survey for Chimney Swift, Bank Swallow, and Barn Swallow; conduct nest and roost monitoring, and implement recovery activities
· Conduct stewardship and outreach with urban and agricultural land owners/managers, and participate in the planning and implementation of additional outreach efforts; special events, presentations, etc.
· Coordinate with field supervisor to plan day-to-day activities
· Help create and maintain good relationships with land owners/managers, volunteers, and other stakeholders
· Other tasks as needed; data entry, questionnaires with land owners/managers, social media content creation, etc.
Qualifications and Skills:
• B.Sc. – completed or currently enrolled in biology, ecology, or an equivalent wildlife-related program
• Experience working with species at risk or landbirds; experience or good knowledge of Chimney Swift, Bank Swallow, and Barn Swallow (life history and threats)
• Experience conducting bird or wildlife surveys, implementing recovery activities
• Experience collaborating with and coordinating volunteers and partners
• Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing scientific data
• Stewardship or outreach experience, particularly pertaining to species at risk or environmental issues
• Able to work in a team environment and independently with little supervision
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Event planning and outreach with diverse audiences
• Bilingualism is a strong asset, especially for NB position(s)
• Standard First Aid (current certification or obtained by start date)
• Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
Salary and Compensation:
• $16 per hour for 40 hour work week, plus statutory benefits (e.g., vacation days)
• Mileage to field sites will be reimbursed at $0.45/km
Please note that fieldwork and in-person activities may be impacted by Covid-19 restrictions. When not in the field, the chosen candidate will work from home and will be responsible for providing their own workspace.
