POSITION CONCEPT
The Ontario Director, under the supervision of the VP of Conservation and Science, is responsible for the effective management of Birds Canada’s Ontario programs. The incumbent will supervise staff, contractors and volunteers; ensure all projects are adequately funded and conducted to high standards, meet all contractual obligations (e.g., reporting) on time and within budgets, and work towards growing and developing the program and staff. S/he is responsible for developing relationships with program partners, including government agencies, other NGOs, and funders. The Director works with the communications team to ensure that results are disseminated to key audiences, including members, the general public and the professional communities.

Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas – 3
Ontario Breeding Bird Survey
Ontario Aerial Insectivores (Ontario Swiftwatch and swallows)
Ontario Forest Birds at Risk Program
Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program
Ontario Nocturnal Owl Survey
American Woodcock Singing Ground Survey
EDUCATION AND SKILLS
The Ontario Program Director holds a degree in an appropriate field or equivalent experience.
The incumbent will have experience in:
managing conservation programs and projects, preferably related to birds
leading research-based and stewardship-based programs and projects
managing finances, including budgeting
hiring and supervising staff, contractors and volunteers
developing and maintaining relationships with various partners and stakeholders including government agencies, ENGOs, academics and industry
fundraising, with a demonstrated successful track record, grant management and reporting to funders
social media and interviewing for traditional media
Knowledge and skills:
birds and bird conservation
ability to prioritize in the face of changing budgets and priorities
ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
ability to deliver results
Strong assets include:
French language skills
Experience managing and/or developing volunteer-based citizen science programs
Experience working with Indigenous Peoples
TRAVEL AND WORK SCHEDULE
This position requires occasional travel for meetings with partners and other stakeholders, as well as with staff at remote locations during the field season.
LOCATION
Birds Canada headquarters in Port Rowan, Ontario, with the potential to work remotely.
SALARY
This is a Birds Canada Band 5 position ($63,161-$77,700/year).
