Coastal Stewardship Biologist
This vital position will be based out of Bouctouche, NB and offers an outstanding opportunity to gain skills in species at risk recovery, coastal bird monitoring, contributing to research through the re-sighting of banded birds, and fostering stewardship of beaches through Birds Canada’s SE NB Piping Plover Conservation Project. This 12 week position will start in mid-May at $16.00/hr (40 hr/week). Depending on funding, the position may be extended by 1-2 weeks. Under supervision of Birds Canada’s SE NB Project Coordinator, the Coastal Stewardship Biologist will:
- Conduct beach surveys to identify threats to breeding Piping Plover and beach habitat,
- Assist in the re-sighting of banded Piping Plovers
- Monitor Piping Plovers, nests and chicks to determine breeding success;
- Protect beach breeding habitat from disturbance;
- Conduct educational outreach activities in French and English that improve awareness about endangered Piping Plovers, coastal ecosystems and stewardship practices and build community support for healthy coastal wildlife;
- Collect data on other beach wildlife and on human-use of beaches;
- Assist with data entry and proofing using an online database and MS Excel;
- Assist in the coordination and training of volunteers.
Requirements:
- Access to personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed at $0.45/km).
- Bilingual.
- Experience and/or strong interest in wildlife conservation and species at risk recovery.
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to approach the public on beaches and at community events.
- Ability to walk long distances on sand.
- Flexible schedule, including willingness to work long days and weekends when required.
The position is remote from the NB Birds Canada office. The chosen candidate will work from home when not in the field and will be responsible for providing their own workspace. This position reports to the SE NB Project Coordinator (Denise Maillet).
