Field Technician – Ontario Piping Plover Program
The Ontario Piping Plover Program team at Birds Canada is seeking one experienced, highly-motivated, and personable field staff to assist with the Ontario Piping Plover Program beginning in May 2023. The position is a 3-month contract, taking place at Piping Plover breeding beaches in Southern Ontario.
Contract start and end dates: May 1 – July 28, 2023
Job Location: Piping Plover breeding beaches across Southern Ontario, which may include; Sauble Beach, Wasaga Beach, Darlington Provincial Park, Presqu’ile Provincial Park, and/or Toronto Island.
Position Concept
The Piping Plover Field Technician will report daily to the Ontario Piping Plover Field Coordinator; and will assist with all aspects of the program. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to; beach surveys, nest monitoring, data collection and entry, implementing recovery activities, public outreach and education on beaches and at special events, volunteer coordination, and public speaking. Technician must be comfortable engaging the public. Technician must be capable of carrying equipment on sand, and walking long distances on sand beaches. Technician must be comfortable spending long days outdoors in hot conditions.
Education/Training
Although not required, some candidates may be the process of, or have already completed, a B.Sc. in biology or ecology or an equivalent wildlife-related program. Relevant experience or other informal and formal education/training are equally considered.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience working with species at risk or shorebirds;
- Experience conducting bird or wildlife surveys and implementing species recovery activities
- Experience collaborating with and coordinating volunteers and project partners
- Collecting, managing, and analyzing scientific data
- Stewardship or outreach experience, pertaining to species at risk or environmental issues, and/or outreach with diverse audiences
- Able to work in a team environment as well as independently with little supervision
- Strong communication skills
- Valid Driver’s license (G preferred, G2 accepted)
- Valid First Aid Certification (obtained before contract start date)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada (if applicable, successful applicants must provide a copy of their work visa and temporary SIN prior to commencing work)

Duties will include:
- Survey for Piping Plovers, nest monitoring, and implement recovery activities at beaches throughout Southern Ontario
- Conduct stewardship and outreach with beach goers, and participate in the planning and implementation of additional outreach efforts; special events, presentations, virtual content, etc.
- Coordinate with supervisor to plan and implement day-to-day activities
- Help create and maintain good relationships with beach goers, residents and other stakeholders
- Other tasks as needed (including but not limited to: data entry, questionnaires with beach goers, social media content creation, etc.)
Salary: $18-20 per hour, depending on project-relevant experience and expertise, for 40h work week, plus statutory benefits, annual $150 allowance for sun safety clothing/items and predetermined accommodations (rental property primarily, some camping) specific to contract needs.
