BC Entanglement Mitigation Specialist
(12-month term with possibility of extension)
The CWF marine conservation program aims to achieve conservation by eliminating harmful effects of human activities on marine wildlife. Our current focus is on the effect of commercial fisheries and marine traffic on large whales. The main principles of this threat-based approach are to inform our actions through scientific investigations, to create dialogue with stakeholders in our investigations and evaluations, and to seek changes in human activities that will allow their continued operation while achieving meaningful conservation.
We have growing success with this approach for reducing entanglement risk in Atlantic Canada and we intend to expand this to Canada’s west coast using our experience in these issues.
We are seeking a skilled and experienced individual to lead this effort as part of the CWF Marine Conservation Team. This position will report to the Senior Conservation Biologist – Marine Programs.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of a program to reduce the entanglement risk to west coast marine wildlife, focusing on cetaceans and pinnipeds.
- Establish an evidence-based approach, in collaboration with the CWF fisheries management research group, to support the entanglement risk mitigation program.
- Establish and maintain dialogue with fish harvesters including commercial, recreational, and Indigenous fishers, to learn about the fishing methods, to share knowledge about entanglements, and to collaboratively identify opportunities for eliminating entanglement risk.
- Coordinate, and assist fish harvesters with scientific investigations related to fishing gear, including trialing emerging technology that may prevent entanglements.
- Assist in report writing, preparing grant proposals, the delivery of presentations, and financial and operational management related to the project.
Additional Expectations:
- This work may require travel throughout the Canadian west coast.
- This may require working on commercial fishing vessels.
Required Qualifications:
- A working knowledge of fixed gear fisheries of the Canadian west coast.
- Strong inter-personal skills.
- Post-secondary degree in science, management, or sustainability – or demonstrated experience producing similar skills.
- Capable of self-directed, and goal-oriented work.
- Good skills in verbal and written communication (English)
- Experience in scientific investigations.
- A valid driver’s license.
Knowledge skills, abilities:
- Capable of self-directed work by establishing and executing a work plan.
- Capable of developing an operational understanding of new fishing gear systems.
- Initiative in the design, evaluation, and implementation of field projects.
Assets:
- An advanced university degree on a topic related to wildlife conservation.
- Experience in commercial fishing.

Work Conditions
- Full-time, 12-month fixed-term with possibility of extension.
- Typically working 37.5 hours per week.
- Location: The successful candidate will be required to work from home, preferably based near important fishing communities in southern BC
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team.
