Waste Reduction Assistant
Two (2) Temporary Full-Time Positions
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking a motivated and positive individual with a passion for environmental issues to join our Waste Program Team. Reporting to the Supervisor, Waste Programs, the Waste Reduction Assistant will work with residents and internal stakeholders to advance the City’s goal of reducing its waste to landfill. The Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of duties toward promoting recycling and organics programs within the City and educating the public on using these programs. The Assistant must be able to work independently, follow directions provided, and work scheduled shifts, including weekends and overtime as needed.
Duties include but are not limited to:
· Educate residents and staff about the importance of waste reduction.
· Assist in the design, preparation and distribution of marketing materials.
· Promote the City’s waste programs at local events.
· Conduct visual audits of waste set-outs, including walking neighbourhoods and checking carts/bins for compliance for the curbside program.
· Assist with waste composition audits, including sorting and measuring samples of collected garbage, recyclables and organics.
· Work with a diverse range of local stakeholders, including businesses and property management companies to promote waste diversion initiatives.
The successful candidates will have a minimum Grade 12 Diploma and possess an Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License. Incumbents will have excellent and engaging interpersonal skills, with the ability to multi task, problem solve and work independently. The ability to deal with a wide variety of people and personalities in a professional manner is essential. Candidates must be comfortable with physically demanding work, including walking long distances and working outdoors. This position requires your commitment for the duration of the season.
This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. Candidates are required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.
Rate of Pay: $19.38 – $21.31 per hour
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday; 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
(Occasional weekend/holiday during city events)
Duration: May 4, 2020 – August 28, 2020
