Summary of Functions
Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Community Outreach, this position will support CVC’s Community Outreach & Education team in the corporate and community stewardship programs.
Crew Leaders will support the assessment and stewardship of past planting sites, and physically prepare sites in advance of planting using equipment, like brush saws, to remove tall herbaceous plant material. The successful candidates will assist with various administrative and asset management tasks such as data entry and analysis, communications and social media support, and equipment inventory.
This position also supports preparation and delivery of community stewardship events that reach diverse audiences, including families, community groups, and businesses, which often occur on weekends.
Candidates should have an interest in nature and working outdoors, be suited for physical work in the outdoors, possess experience engaging the community, ideally through environmental activities/issues. They should have a positive attitude, be detail-oriented, willing to take on new tasks and motivate program participants with positive enthusiasm. Crew Leaders are expected to partake in all job requirements, including strenuous physical activity in the outdoors and traversing uneven terrain in potentially adverse weather conditions. This role requires the candidate to work on a close-knit team, but also independently at times. As a CVC representative, candidates should have strong organizational and problem-solving skills and experience in the environmental field.

Anticipated Start and End Dates: March 21 to November 4, 2022 (35 hours/week)
Hourly Rate: $19.75/hour
Eligibility Requirements
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Science/Studies, Ecology, or related discipline
- Experience and comfort working outdoors in a variety of seasons
- One year work experience related to environmental stewardship and/or restoration
- Capable of identifying common flora and fauna, and interpreting nature
- Skilled in public engagement with strong communication and customer service abilities
- Experience in volunteer management and supervision
- Able to work some evenings and the majority of weekends, including Earth Day (April 23/23, 2022) weekend
- Experience with restoration equipment and small motors (strong asset, training provided)
- Experience driving larger vehicles, trucks and trailers (strong asset, training provided)
- Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license (condition of employment)
- Driver’s abstract (condition of employment)
- Standard First Aid (condition of employment)
- Police reference check with vulnerable sector screening (condition of employment)
Summary of Major Tasks
- Support stewardship site maintenance, site preparation and watering
- Assess past planting sites with Survey 123 and Collector App.
- Support administrative tasks such as social media, data entry, survey analysis, reporting
- Prepare, maintain, load, deliver and set-up equipment and plant material at stewardship sites
- Implement and support citizen science, stewardship and restoration events for participants
- Lead participants safely through stewardship activities to create a positive event experience
- Represent CVC while working alongside participants and community partners
- Other duties as assigned
Other Information
This position generally works 35 hours, Monday to Friday with frequent weekend work (Saturdays and Sundays) during the spring and fall, and occasional evening work. Successful candidates will work out of our Warwick location in Caledon with occasional work from home and/or our Head Office in Mississauga. This position requires strenuous physical labour in all weather conditions for site maintenance, preparation, assessments, and outreach events.
