Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust is hiring for the position of JUNIOR FIELD TECHNICIAN. This six-month 37.5 hrs/wk position integrates sustainable agriculture and wildlife management. The work is based in Delta, BC, an area that boasts some of Canada’s most productive soils and is recognized as Canada’s top Important Bird Area. This is an exciting job opportunity for an organized, self-directed, detailed oriented scientist interested in stewardship on farms, regenerative agricultural practices, wildlife and fieldwork.
Roles and Responsibilities
The DF&WT Junior Field Technician is responsible for:
• GPS verification and GIS data input of fields enrolled in DF&WT’s Winter Cover Crop, Grassland Set-aside Stewardship, and Blueberry Rest Programs.
• Assisting with waterfowl surveys of farmland and weekly species-at-risk surveys of grassland set-asides throughout the Fraser River Delta.
• Assisting with vegetation surveys of winter cover crop fields.
• Data entry and analysis of collected research.
• Helping to translate key research into tangible content for social media, blogs, DFWT website etc.
• Helping to establish a soils database to track and communicate long-term changes derived from regenerative practices.
• Document field work through visual tools for social media (photos and videos)
• Support DF&WT by liaising with farmers and past projects and report back to the Executive Director regularly
The successful candidate will possess:
• Proficient in basic GIS analyses (e.g. ArcGIS software)
• Knowledge/training in agroecosystem and/or wildlife management. Bachelors of Science or Associates Degree in soil/agriculture/wildlife/resource management, or in the process of obtaining.
• Aptitude and training in the use of word, spreadsheets, and database management.
• Independent, self-starter attitude, highly organized and detail-oriented.
• Class 5 Driver’s License and the use of a vehicle.
