What You Will Do
As Conservation Program Specialist, your main duties will require you to foster collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholder groups including municipal and industry leaders as well as community partners and the public to advance wetland conservation in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). You will work collaboratively with local stakeholders to identify high priority wetlands for conservation and implement creative solutions to secure and showcase these important natural assets.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Foster collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders to conserve wetlands in HRM.
· Conduct wetland site and functional assessments.
· Conduct GIS prioritization analysis to identify wetlands with high priority for conservation in HRM.
· Identify opportunities to conserve wetlands through conservation agreements/ easements, land acquisition, municipal designations, or other innovative approaches.
· Support public outreach and engagement initiatives.
· Assist with securing project funding and implement project deliverables on schedule and on budget.
· Engage with other municipalities in Nova Scotia on wetland conservation, respond to public inquires and support other staff on the DUC team.
Who We Need
This position requires you to be an effective communicator and able to build positive working relationships. You are a self-starter who can work with anyone and capable of seeing the bigger picture and thinking outside the box.
You possess strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills. You are also a creative problem solver with a positive attitude and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team.
What You Will Bring
· University or College degree in an ecology, environment or sustainability related field.
· Practical field skills and understanding of basic biology, local species, and ecosystems.
· Knowledge about wetland ecosystems, environmental policy and municipal governance.
· Experience leading public outreach initiatives and engaging in media relations.
· Strong leadership, organizational, and oral and written communication skills in English (French an asset).
· Proficiency using GPS-based technologies, Microsoft suite programs and ArcGIS.
· Familiarity with the Wetland Ecological Services Protocol, wetland delineation, green infrastructure and nature- based climate solutions considered an asset.
· Local knowledge of HRM environment an asset.
· A minimum of 2-years of relevant work experience.
· A valid driver’s license and proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
