Research Technician – 2 Year Term
Position Details: Full Time, 2-year Term, New Position
Salary: Salary range for this position will be between $36,200 to $45,300 per year, based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will be commensurate with each individual’s education and experience as it relates to the position.
Location: Oak Hammock Marsh, near Stonewall, MB with the flexibility of a hybrid schedule.

The Opportunity
This position will primarily support a research project that seeks to understand how wetland health in the Prairie Pothole Region influences waterfowl productivity. The Research Technician will work under the supervision of a Research Scientist and collaborate with academic and industry partners to assist with field work activities, data collection and management, field-team supervision, as well as logistical support.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Collection of field data on waterfowl productivity, wetland water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and biodiversity supporting the mission and conservation vision of DUC.
- Entering, organizing, managing, and annotating field data from drones, camera traps, autonomous recording units, aquatic invertebrates, and water samples.
- Maintaining field equipment, living accommodations, and rental vehicles.
- Processing, shipping, and transporting field samples to project collaborators.
- Supervision of seasonal field staff including coordination across project teams.
- Supporting field season planning, reporting, and logistics annually.
- Adherence to and stewarding safe work practices.
Additional Details
The successful candidate will ideally have an affinity for the outdoors and a passion for conservation. Field work for this position will be based at a field site in Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba for a period of approximately 4 months (April – August). Accommodation during field work will be discussed during interviews but will be provided and include shared accommodations with other seasonal field staff.
Requirements
- A degree or diploma in Fish and Wildlife, Renewable Resource Management, Environmental Monitoring, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline;
- At least 2 years of experience conducting field work;
- Possess a valid driver’s licence;
- Must be able to perform field work in and around water, cope with poor weather, and walk long distances in challenging terrain while carrying equipment;
- Experience with extended travel away from home;
- Willingness to work weekends and hours exceeding a regular workday to accommodate field work schedule;
- Proven track record of adhering to safe work procedures;
- Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team;
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs;
Assets
- Experience operating Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs; drones);
- Experience with invertebrate, plant, and bird identification, specifically waterfowl identification;
- Experience supervising or managing seasonal staff;
- Experience liaising with landowners.
