Conservation Technician – Summer Term
The Opportunity
The Conservation Technician will assist with the development and management of wetland habitats throughout the Lower Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island regions. This position will provide you an excellent opportunity to learn about and work in the field of Conservation/Resource Management.
Duties & Responsibilities
Field Operation and Management of Wetland Conservation Projects
- assisting DUC staff in the daily operation of water control structures
- documenting and inspecting dikes and water controls on existing projects
- performing maintenance activities on existing projects such as: installing signs, vegetation control, repairing trails, walkways and gates; removing beaver debris; day-to-day operations of pumping facilities of existing projects
- recording activities/changes on wetland conservation projects
Habitat Inventory and Waterfowl Census
- conducting field surveys on existing and/or future projects within freshwater wetlands and inter-tidal habitats
- recording waterfowl observations during project inspections
- assisting with ongoing habitat monitoring projects such as monitoring of sediment and elevation in estuaries
Administration of Wetland Conservation Projects
- assisting with wetland file management, photographic databases, cataloging images, entry or retrieval of computer data (including scanning),
- preparing report materials
Requirements
- Students pursuing a career in agriculture, engineering, biology, plant ecology, environmental science or resource management preferred
- Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- Must have a valid current driver’s license (in good standing) and a current driver’s abstract
- Knowledge of basic biology, local species and ecosystems; GPS-based technologies and survey techniques; computer programs such as the Microsoft suite of programs; ArcGIS (an asset);
- Construction experience (an asset); and operation of various field equipment (which DUC will provide) including: 4WD pickup truck, tools such as mowers, brush cutters, chain saws, generators, chest waders, binoculars, and cameras as required.
Additional Details
- Start date is May 4, 2020; end date is ~August 31, 2020
- Pay range: $18 per hour, based on a 35-hour work-week (plus 4% vacation pay)
- This position involves physical work, heavy lifting and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
