The Ministry of Environment, Forest Service Branch in Prince Albert, is seeking an energetic, experienced self-starter to join our forest insect and disease team as the Forest Health Specialist. This position is one of two specialists reporting to the Provincial Forest Insect and Disease Expert, within the Planning, Policy and Protection Unit. This position will lead the delivery of programs that protect Saskatchewan from invasive and native forest insect and disease species posing a threat to Saskatchewan’s forests. Duties will include all phases of program planning and delivery including: risk analysis, prevention, surveillance, detection, monitoring and control measures, data analysis and evaluation, and reporting for the primary provincial forest health program.
As the Forest Health Specialist, you will:
- design and lead public consultation and extension activities to educate the public on invasive and forest health issues, report progress, respond to concerns, and encourage compliance with legal requirements;
- procure and administer the work of contractors including working on the competitive selection procedures, drafting and negotiating contracts, monitoring performance and invoicing;
- complete forest health inspections and compliance as well as train ministry officers and municipal officials on compliance and enforcement procedures;
- improve program effectiveness by developing strategies, operational procedures, monitoring results, and staying current with advances in the field of forest entomology and pathology; and
- demonstrate strong technical writing, inter-personal and communication skills and ability to build relationships and partnerships.
The competencies required for this position would be obtained through a Master’s degree specializing in some aspect of forest insect and disease management along with the required undergraduate degree in forestry, forest entomology, natural resources management or environmental biology. Demonstrated experience planning and implementing operational programs to control invasive species like Mountain Pine Beetle or other major forest pests (for example spruce budworm) is essential. The successful candidate must be eligible for membership with the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals within two years of commencement.
This position will require travel to remote locations to conduct work activities, work irregular hours, conduct field work, and operate trucks and all-terrain vehicles. A current and valid driver’s licence is required.
