Water Structures Maintenance Technician
General Accountabilities
The Water Structures Maintenance Technician position plays a key role in the dam management, dyke management, and water monitoring programs at the GRCA. This position is responsible for field maintenance of the river gauging stations, monitoring network components and, water control structures including all GRCA dams and dykes. The maintenance program is vital to ensuring the integrity of the water control structures and monitoring system. This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor of Water Structures.
This position implements projects assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor of Water Structures. A broad knowledge of water control structures, health and safety, electromechanical systems and monitoring equipment is required to fulfill this position. Good time management, project planning, contractor relations and hands on skills are essential in this position. Comfort in Working at Heights and Working in and around Water and capability to perform physical requirements is essential to this position.
Full knowledge of the monitoring system and monitoring equipment is required to allow a timely return to service of various components of this system during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
Knowledge and competency in the operation of all water control structures operated by the GRCA is required to allow this position to act as an emergency operator. This position works closely with Information Technology staff to maintain business continuity of the monitoring system equipment, which operates over a wide area network.
Ideal candidate would be enrolled and working as an electrical apprenticeship or electronics technician field.
Specific Accountabilities
1. Perform seasonal and routine operation and maintenance of structures and mechanical equipment as assigned.
2. Perform seasonal and routine maintenance on all gauge stations and equipment associated with water level, water quality and climate monitoring network as assigned.
3. Retrieve collected data from various water level monitoring equipment, deploy, maintain, and replace equipment.
4. Assist with documenting the maintenance actions, and resulting periodic structural and mechanical inspections, of all flood control structures and monitoring stations. Assist with maintenance of all required logs, files, and reports.
5. Perform seasonal placement and retrieval of all public safety buoys and booms required at GRCA water control structures as assigned.
6. Perform ongoing regular maintenance of hydro generating turbines and sub-station equipment at all major dams. Assist with major repairs and services to hydro generating turbines and sub-stations as assigned.
7. Perform annual inspections and servicing of emergency backup generators at specific dams and the administration office.
8. Act as a backup operator to any flood control structure and emergency response for the entire network.
9. Work with Information Technology to install and maintain the SCADA system control panels used by the data collection system at GRCA dams, gauge stations, and water quality stations.
10. Work closely with the Information Technology staff to install, troubleshoot and maintain wireless network data modems, antennas, network cabling and phone cabling at GRCA dams, parks, and nature centers. .
11. Purchasing of all required materials, equipment and supplies to perform duties effectively.
12. Complete seasonal operations of fish ways control structures at designated dams.
13. Assist and train GRCA staff to carry out seasonal water structure and gauge station general maintenance.
14. Work with the Water Resources Project Coordinator to implement and maintain the required public safety signage around dams across the entire watershed.
15. Work closely with Engineering Staff and operators at specific dams to develop and maintain comprehensive operation and maintenance manuals.
16. Complete daily CVOR vehicle inspection prior to operation of assigned GRCA vehicle.
Technical Accountabilities
1. Graduate as a Technician/Technologist in Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, millwrighting, construction or an equivalent post-secondary program is required in a related discipline.
2. Minimum three years related work experience.
3. Experience and general knowledge of structural mechanical systems, electrical systems, network cabling and simple electronic circuit trouble shooting. Aptitude and experience in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting of systems is essential to this position.
4. Knowledge of general construction practices, millwrighting, construction equipment, mechanical systems and hydraulic systems.
5. Detailed knowledge of occupational health and safety act, regulations, safety devices and safety equipment for a wide variety of areas.
6. Excellent organizational skills with respect to project planning and time management skills.
7. Knowledge of network communication, telemetry and SCADA systems installation and service is desirable.
8. Knowledge and experience of computers and with the MS-Office suite of tools particularly Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
9. Up to date First Aid and CPR certification.
10. Experience with wireless equipment.
11. Knowledge of basics of electrical, electronics and plumbing codes.
12. Valid driver’s license and clean drivers abstract for CVOR operation.
13. Valid pleasure craft license.
14. Physical requirements include working from heights and ladders, lifting heavy equipment and materials, working in and around water and in adverse conditions.

The pay range for this position is Job Level 6 $30.22 to $37.77/35 hours per week
