General Accountabilities
Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Communications and Environmental Education, the Environmental Educator will deliver developed environmental education programs to children/youth (ECE/K to Grade 12) and adults. These programs may be on-line studies for environmental outdoor education through virtual class rooms or on-site delivery. In addition to the delivery of curriculum-based lesson plans, the Environmental Educator will coordinate Day Camp Programs The Environmental Educator will provide hands-on customer service and engage visitors during programs and events; work with the Environmental Education Specialist to update, maintain and improve existing programs; and provide customer service and administrative support by booking and scheduling programs.
Specific Accountabilities
1. Deliver curriculum based programming to school classes both in class and on-line.
2. Deliver on site and off site outreach programs and presentations to schools and the public and may include visitor services programs at the parks.
3. Coordinate the planning and oversee the day to day operation of Day Camp programs including routines, schedules and procedures for camp operation.
4. Assist in the preparation and delivery of pre-camp and staff training for camp staff.
5. Provide leadership to camp staff in terms of programming, safety and managing campers, including risk management activities.
6. Manage camper registrations and camper information.
7. Communicate with parents, group leaders and teachers in a professional and timely manner.
8. Help maintain program equipment and Nature Centre facilities.
9. Perform day to day administrative support such as record keeping; booking programs; invoicing; and timely receipts and deposits.
10. Provide pertinent information and services to clients and members of the public regarding all aspects of programs.
11. Provide assistance and input on educational programs and materials.
12. Participate in day to day maintenance of facilities and equipment to maintain a clean, safe workplace.
Technical Accountabilities
1. Completion of a post-secondary education (college or university) or equivalent in Natural Sciences, Outdoor Recreation, Education, Environmental Studies or related discipline or equivalent experience.
2. Two or more years of experience coordinating camps, camp activities and/or delivering environmental education programs. Experience with delivery of virtual environmental education is considered an asset.
3. Excellent customer service and communication skills, both oral and written.
4. Knowledge of GRCA mandate, the local watershed and natural history as well as flora and fauna identification skills.
5. Knowledge of nature centre operation, procedures and policies.
6. Valid CPR and First Aid certification.
7. Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
8. Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and risk management planning.
9. Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel within the GRCA watershed.
10. Small Drinking Water System Operator Certificate is considered an asset.
