The Opportunity
Greenpeace Canada is seeking a strategic, inspiring, and compassionate leader to serve as the Director of Programs and Communications. This pivotal role is responsible for leading and advancing Greenpeace Canada’s Program and Communications work, ensuring its quality, coherence, and impact. With a sharp eye for opportunities and a supportive approach to management, you will lead Greenpeace Canada’s program and communications team to achieve external impact in turbulent times.
As the senior leader of a large, distributed team, the Director of Program and Communications will motivate and support staff, fostering collaboration and driving alignment across Greenpeace Canada’s program areas to maximize impact. As part of the senior management team, this role will contribute to organizational strategy and decision-making, to uphold Greenpeace Canada’s mission in ways that embody justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
This role will see you leading and overseeing Greenpeace Canada’s program and communications work, ensuring that strategy, planning, implementation, and evaluation are effectively executed in collaboration with unit heads. You will drive quality, consistency, focus and impact at strategic and narrative levels, ensuring that Greenpeace’s advocacy and engagement efforts stay bold, engaging, and effective.
You will manage, motivate, and inspire a diverse team, fostering a healthy, collaborative and high-performing culture. By setting clear priorities, assigning responsibilities, and identifying staff development needs, you will empower your team to excel while cultivating a positive, dynamic, outward facing, and accountable departmental culture.
Staying ahead of political, social, communications, and technological trends, you will provide strategic insight and leadership, advising senior management and the Board on program development and emerging opportunities. You will also take the lead in risk management in relation to programs and communications, proactively identifying, monitoring, and mitigating potential challenges while supporting staff in navigating risks effectively.
Your ability to build strong relationships will be key, as you collaborate with Greenpeace International, ENGOs, advocacy organizations, and external partners to work in allyship as part of a broader movement. As a senior spokesperson, you will represent the organization on key program and communications issues, helping to shape public discourse and advocacy efforts.
This role will see you measuring and improving the success of Greenpeace campaigns, driving a culture of learning and transparency. You will report on program performance to the Executive Director, Directors Council, Board of Directors, and donors, strengthening accountability and alignment with Greenpeace Canada’s mission.
Working closely with the Director of Fundraising & Engagement, you will align program strategies with fundraising efforts, developing integrated plans and fostering relationships with key funders. You will also play a central role in promoting Greenpeace Canada’s deep commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and safety (JEDIS) is reflected in all aspects of its program and communications work.
Finally, you will oversee program and communications budgets, maintaining financial accountability while supporting department heads in planning and resource allocation.

You are a strategic and visionary leader with the ability to inspire and guide a multidisciplinary team while fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture. With expertise in communications, engagement, campaigning, strategic planning, and team leadership, you ensure the strongest possible impact in line with Greenpeace Canada’s mission and values.
Your advanced communication and engagement skills enable you to oversee campaign strategies, media strategies, crisis communications, digital engagement, and oversee large scale campaign activities including non-violent direct action (NVDA).
With knowledge of change and project management principles, you are highly organized and adaptable, you can manage multiple priorities, assess risks, and develop strategic responses to protect and advance Greenpeace’s impact.
A skilled negotiator and relationship-builder, you cultivate partnerships with external allies and stakeholders. Your financial acumen supports effective budget oversight and long-term planning. With deep knowledge of environmental and social justice issues, large-scale campaigning, and engagement strategies, you drive impactful advocacy on both national and international stages.
Knowledge of English with a high level of fluency; advanced skills in French is highly desirable.

The Director of Programs and Communications can work from anywhere in Canada, either from a Greenpeace Canada office (in Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver), remotely, or in a hybrid arrangement.
