H3M Environmental Ltd. is seeking an experienced and motivated Intermediate Environmental Professional to work as part of the Remediation / Reclamation team, in the management and execution of environmental assessments, contaminated site remediation, surface reclamation and monitoring projects for clients throughout Western Canada. The qualified candidate will play a very important role in our continued growth and portfolio diversification.
The Intermediate Environmental Professional / Environmental Scientist will be responsible for safely executing soil sampling, characterization and management activities for a large infrastructure project. The role also has a strong focus on supervising teammates, writing and reviewing technical reports and coordinating / communicating with the Project Manager, consultants and sub-contractors.
This position is mostly based in the field (80 to 90%) with some minor percentage of office component for data processing and reporting.
The ideal candidate possesses advanced technical skills in soil sampling and characterization, contaminated soil management and disposal, as well as experience with groundwater monitoring and sampling techniques. The role offers professional growth opportunities in pre- and post-construction planning, project management, and training and mentoring junior and entry level staff.
The work requires technical knowledge in the areas of soil science, contaminated site management, and groundwater monitoring in accordance with the British Columbia (BC) Contaminated Sites Regulation (CSR), site specific Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), as well as the use and interpretation of applicable provincial regulatory requirements and guidelines.
Role and Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Lead coordination and execution of environmental assessment activities during active construction
In-situ and ex-situ soil sampling and characterization
Supervise excavation, storage and handling of contaminated soils
Monitor and sample groundwater monitoring wells, as required
Manage complex field data and provide initial interpretations to make field-related decisions
Assist the Project Manager in ensuring delivery of high-quality products in accordance with regulatory requirements and project scope
Prepare high quality scientific and technical reports in accordance with quality assurance / quality control procedures
Develop and maintain work plans, budgets, and schedules
Participate in H3M’s Health & Safety Program
Supervise, train, and mentor junior environmental staff and Indigenous workers aligned to H3M core values, standard operating procedures, and technical protocols
Qualifications
University degree or technical diploma in an environmental discipline (e.g. environmental science, environmental engineering, geography, earth science, biology, or soil/reclamation science)
3+ years of progressive experience within the energy or resource development sectors in an operational or consulting capacity
Experienced and knowledgeable in BC Contaminated Sites Regulation and associated Hazardous Waste Regulation, guidelines and industry best practices as they pertain to environmental site assessment, remediation and reclamation
Demonstrated effective leadership skills and strong independence in scheduling, prioritizing and completing work tasks
Strong ability to conduct field assessments and collect/manage large amounts of data
Attention to detail and ability to produce professional deliverables on time and on budget
Ability to coordinate project planning, logistics, and preparation for field work
Ability to make complex decisions with consideration of appropriate inputs
Verbal and written communication skills, technical report writing skills
Valid Driver License
Member or eligible for membership with an environmentally related professional association
(e.g. P. Ag, AScT, R.P.F, R.P.Bio, P.Eng, P.Geo, P.Chem, etc.) would be beneficial
