About Humber Arboretum
Encompassing 100 hectares at the back of Humber Polytechnic North Campus, the Humber Arboretum is free to visit and offers a variety of programming to both Humber Polytechnic students and the general public. It exists as a unique tri-partnership between Humber Polytechnic, the City of Toronto, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. The Centre for Urban Ecology (CUE) is home to the Humber Arboretum’s educational programs and special events. At Humber Polytechnic, the Humber Arboretum and CUE are part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology.

What you will do
Reporting to the Ecological Stewardship Specialist and the Humber Arboretum Manager, the incumbent will assist in implementing an invasive plant species management plan, conducting hands-on removal, planting, and other activities within the Humber Arboretum gardens and surrounding Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) while engaging in a variety of ways with Humber Polytechnic staff, students and Arboretum partners.
Job Duties
- Surveys and monitors the Arboretum property to become knowledgeable about the plant and animal species present, establishing the scope, location and extent of the invasive species
- Works alongside other organizations to assist with implementation of the control schedule
- Completes tasks as a part of daily work plan as assigned by Ecological Stewardship Specialist
- Assists in photo monitoring of select areas
- Works in the field removing invasive plants using best management practices and appropriate tools
- Assists in the documentation of areas and species controlled and quantities removed at the end of the season
- Responds to public interests by sharing information about the local ecosystem and answering a wide variety of questions
Qualifications
Must be eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs Program:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Education
Completed or working towards a diploma or degree in a related field, such as Ecosystem Management, Urban Ecology, or Habitat/Ecosystem Restoration.
Skills
- Existing knowledge of invasive and native plant species in Ontario is considered an asset, or eagerness to learn.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to take on new tasks effectively and efficiently and ability to adapt in a dynamic and constantly changing work environment.
- Ability to multi-task and be flexible with priorities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- High degree of professionalism and attention to detail with excellent time management and collaboration skills.
- Current certificate in First Aid.
- Ontario Driver’s License, Pesticide License, or Chainsaw License would all be considered an asset, but are not required.
