Land Stewardship Technician
Island Nature Trust (INT) is Prince Edward Island’s oldest private charitable land trust, protecting natural lands and waters for wildlife and people in perpetuity. We are a membership-based organization directed by a volunteer board and supported by a small contingent of dedicated staff. There is currently an opportunity to join our team as a Land Stewardship Technician.
About the Position:
The successful candidate will assist in stewarding Island Nature Trust’s protected Natural Areas, while occasionally working with volunteers and the public. Island Nature Trust owns and manages over 60 Natural Areas across PEI and has a network of volunteers that help to protect and steward these special places.
The successful candidate will be supervised by the Land Stewardship Program Manager under the direction of the Executive Director. They will assist with all aspects of Natural Area stewardship, including monitoring properties and conducting fieldwork, recording, and managing biological data, invasive species management, installing signage and other infrastructure where appropriate, tree planting, trail maintenance, and project reporting.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Conducting fieldwork within INT Natural Areas, including biodiversity monitoring, trail maintenance, tree planting, signage installation, invasive species monitoring and management, etc.
- Field data collection & management
- Supporting the Land Stewardship Program Manager and Stewardship Field Operations Coordinator with fieldwork and stewardship-related tasks
Secondary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Engaging in Conservation Guardian volunteer events and public engagement
- Assisting in other programs and facets of the Trust’s work, as requested by management.
- Collaborating with fellow INT team members to prepare media content for newsletters, website, public engagement etc.
Requirements:
Education:
- Required: Minimum one year of post-secondary training in a conservation-related or environmental discipline
Experience:
- Required: Experience conducting field work in various weather conditions and terrains, sometimes by watercraft
- Asset: Experience working with environmental non-government organizations
- Asset: Experience working with species at risk and/or birds
- Asset: Experience working with and managing geographic data and GPS devices
Skills:
- Required: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher software, along with database management skills
- Required: Strong written and oral communication
- Required: Ability to work cooperatively as part of a dynamic team, and adapting quickly to changes or new situations. Can follow direction and seek assistance and input as required
Knowledge:
- Required: Knowledge of PEI’s landscapes, habitats, natural communities, and species
- Required: Knowledge of priority invasive species for PEI
- Required: Knowledge of Species-at-Risk relevant to PEI
- Required: Knowledge of Wabanaki-Acadian forest plant identification
- Asset: Experience conducting auditory bird surveys

- Required: Dependable, responsible, detail-oriented
- Required: An outgoing personality and comfortable with public outreach
- Required: Ability to maintain a positive attitude and friendly demeanor, even during long or tiring fieldwork days
- Required: A commitment to the mission and values of INT
- Required: Must be willing to occasionally work extended hours and weekends outside in all kinds of weather
- Required: Physically fit and able to walk several km’s each day on uneven terrain
Terms of Employment:
- This position is offered as a full-time 16 week contract (37.5 hours/week) beginning in May 2023 to September 2023, with possibility of extension subject to funding availability
- This position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island but will require working with INT staff and volunteers at locations across PEI
- Starting salary is $16.50/hour
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or able to legally work in Canada
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are a requirement
