Key Biodiversity Area Support Technician
KEY BIODIVERSITY AREA SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
Temporary Full Time Contract Position
The Landscape Science and Conservation team at Birds Canada is hiring a Key Biodiversity Area Support Technician, beginning in May 2021.
POSITION CONCEPT
The Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) Support Technician will carry out tasks in relation to the transition of the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) Program to the KBA Program. This will be a remote position, so a computer, internet access, and home office set-up is required.
EDUCATION
Candidates should be in the process of completing, or have already completed, a B.Sc. in biology, ecology, GIS or an equivalent related program.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Good time management and prioritization skills
- Good communication skills (written and verbal)
- The ability to self-motivate, as well as work in a team environment
- Background in biology, ecology, environmental studies, or GIS
- Some volunteer and public outreach experience
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Basic GIS skills
- Experience in project planning and execution
- Willingness to learn new programs, and an interest in conservation
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for (but not limited to):
- Collection, organization, and entry of bird data to help identify Key Biodiversity Areas in Canada
- Assist in the completion of nomination forms for KBAs to be submitted to BirdLife International
- Set up KBA sites on the iNaturalist project developed to aid in biodiversity data collection
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in creation of a webinar educating people about KBAs
- Developing social media content for KBAs in Canada
- Join team meetings weekly, and 1:1 meetings with supervisor (Ontario IBA Coordinator)
SALARY: $17.50/hour (40 hours/week) plus statutory benefits.
