OVERVIEW:
Long Point Basin Land Trust is seeking a qualified individual to join our small but mighty staff in the position of Land Stewardship Technician. You will use your passion for nature to play a key role in assisting the Land Stewardship Manager with stewardship, restoration, and management practices and measures of biodiversity on Long Point Basin Land Trust properties.
The role requires a high demand of physical effort and spending a large amount of time outdoors in nature. REPORTING TO
Land Stewardship Manager
LOCATION
Anywhere in the Long Point Basin – Elgin, Norfolk, Haldimand, Brant and Oxford Counties. The main workplace of this position is the Land Trust office in Port Rowan, ON, and the Land Trust’s nature reserves. There may be the occasional ability to work from home following a schedule agreed upon with the Land Stewardship Manager and the Executive Director. The position requires travel across the Long Point Basin.
TERM AND SALARY
The term of this position is from May 5, 2025, to August 29, 2025. This position is compensated from $20 to $23 per hour (depending on experience and skills) and based on a regular workweek of 37.5 hours. Some weekends may be required.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Assist the Land Stewardship Manager with the following duties:
– Regular property visits to monitor and collect information from properties.
– Management activities on the nature reserves including, but not limited to, invasive and non-native species control and removal, seed collection and broadcasting, trail maintenance, etc.
– Assist with restoration activities such as site preparation and seeding, and any other stewardship/restoration practices necessary (e.g., prescribed burn).
– Support the planning and running of volunteer training, events, and activities.
– Communicate with volunteers and report on volunteer activities as well as ensuring volunteers are recording the necessary information from each property visit (e.g., hours and activities logged).
– Management of all collected information into spreadsheets as per Long Point Basin Land Trust standardized practices of organization.
– Attend community events to engage and communicate with the public and deliver a positive message regarding the stewardship activities completed by Long Point Basin Land Trust.
– Other tasks as requested by the Land Stewardship Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
– Enrolled in, or completed, post-secondary education in the field of biology, ecology or conservation, or equivalent experience.
– Knowledge of conservation biology, restoration ecology, and the native biodiversity of the Carolinian Region and Norfolk County.
– Understanding the importance of restoration, stewardship, and management actions for conservation and biodiversity.
– Familiarity with programs such as iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID to identify and record species occurrences.
– Prepared to travel, work flexible hours at times, and work in remote and rugged areas. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various conditions (e.g. high or low temperatures, rain, snow, biting insects).
– Demonstrated field experience, including the identification and collation of biological inventory data, and the identification of and removal of invasive species.
– Excellent organizational and time management skills that include managing multiple priorities and duties.
– Oral, written, and interpersonal skills required to effectively communicate with landowners, volunteers, and the general public.
