ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
ALUS is a community developed farmer delivered conservation program. It is a voluntary program providing support to farmers for returning marginal and environmentally sensitive farmland into native vegetative cover and wetlands for the production of environmental services. Active in six provinces to date, the ALUS program works with farmers and ranchers to produce valuable ecological services on Canadian farmland. ALUS provides annual payments to its participants to ensure the ongoing stewardship of each of their ALUS projects. For over a decade, ALUS Canada has been building excellent relationships within agricultural communities while perfecting its unique mechanism for delivering conservation outcomes from Canada’s rural acres.
The ALUS program in Elgin County is delivered through a partnership between ALUS Canada and the Long Point Region Conservation Authority.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The ALUS Elgin Program is seeking a Program Coordinator who will coordinate, conduct and deliver the work required to implement the ALUS Program in Elgin County. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the delivery of conservation projects on private agricultural lands and the related extension services; developing and maintaining a good working relationship with Elgin County’s agricultural community; providing administrative support to the project and the Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC); and continuing ALUS communications initiatives.
The Program Coordinator is an employee of the Long Point Region Conservation Authority.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
- Coordinate the delivery and implementation of the ALUS Program on private agricultural lands across Elgin County, under the guidance of the ALUS PAC and Chair.
- Report to the LPRCA Lands and Waters Supervisor.
- Work closely with ALUS Farmer Liaisons to deliver extension services to ALUS Participants as they relate to ecosystem services; ecological restoration practices; habitat creation projects; and site management and maintenance.
- Work closely with project partners including funding partners to deliver frequent and timely project updates.
- Administer the ALUS Elgin program including but not limited to the management of budgets, grants, contracts, and project data.
- Carry out a variety of operational tasks. Duties change seasonally.
- Follow generally accepted administrative policies and practices; conservation and restoration practices; and accounting and financial reporting policies and practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement the ALUS Program within the established protocols, forecasted timeframes, and budget.
- Plan and coordinate the delivery of restoration projects on private agricultural land; draft and formalize conservation agreements with project participants; and deliver annual payments to participating farmers.
- Administration of records, including all financial management and budgeting, for the ALUS Program.
- Maintain and manage internal Database and Mapping systems using GIS & ALUS Canada’s proprietary database.
- Provide extension services to various client groups.
- Network with a variety of partners, agencies, and individuals, including participating farmers, who have committed resources or an interest towards the participation and/or implementation of the ALUS Program.
- Achieve and document milestones which are tied to funding and support from a variety of partners and funding agencies/sources.
- Support the Partnership Advisory Committee, including researching information, minute taking at meetings, processing correspondence, and other general duties as assigned.
- Work with the Partnership Advisory Committee to establish sub committees and/or administer tasks where necessary.
- Implement the ALUS communications plan, including issuance of media releases, coordination of tours and seminars, signage, mailings, maintenance of the mailing list, website and portable ALUS display.
- Liaise and support researchers and others studying various aspects of the ALUS concept.
- Explore opportunities with new partners and funding agencies/organizations/sources for building support for furthering the ALUS concept at a local, provincial and federal level.
- Basic operation of forestry / agricultural equipment and a variety of power and hand tools, for which training will be provided.
- Follow the Community Guidelines as laid out in the ALUS Canada/LPRCA MOU.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILL:
- Post secondary education in related field (Resource Management or Environmental Studies), plus two years related experience working in the field of natural or agricultural resources or combined education and experience equivalent.
- Strong administrative skills.
- Experience in grant and budget management an asset.
- Excellent word processing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel and Access.
- Experience managing and coordinating others.
- Practical understanding of ecological restoration and agricultural practices.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships and to deal with the public.
- Ability to manage a variety of different tasks at any one time.
MUST HAVE:
- Understanding of the practices relating to the field of natural resource management, agriculture, stewardship and conservation planning.
- Working knowledge of GPS and GIS technology.
- Proven ability to work as a member of a team and in situations without direct supervision.
- Flexible work schedule with evening and weekend work as required.
- Excellent communications, administrative, negotiation and organizational skills.
- Good physical dexterity and ability to work in variable weather conditions.
- Must be aware of safe working practices, for volunteers, partners and self, as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment and must have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- A valid Ontario Driver’s license with a clean driving record.
This is a 40-hour week, 12-month contract from date of hire with the possibility of extension subject to funding. Regular working hours 8am to 4:30 p.m., evenings and weekends as required. Free access to LPRCA Conservation Areas. Compensation will commensurate with your experience and qualifications.
