Ecosystem Monitoring Intern
Background
The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation has received funding from the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program to employ a recent graduate under the age of 30 to re-inventory four Smithsonian Institution biodiversity-monitoring plots located in Norfolk County using Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN) vegetation monitoring protocols. The re-inventory of the plots will enable the detection of change in the forest community over a 20-year period.
Position Outline
This position will require a dynamic individual with varied experience. The appropriate candidate will be a well-organized and enthusiastic self-starter. This will be a six-month, full-time, contract position based in Norfolk County with occasional telecommuting from a home office. Possibility for extension on related Biosphere projects for the right person.
The Ecosystem Monitoring Intern will be responsible for collecting DBH data and tree health data on trees and saplings in the plots, inputting the data into a database, analyzing the data and updating the previous reports. And other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
University degree in environmental science/studies, Biology, Forestry or another applicable field
Superior data analysis skills
Good tree identification skills (additional training will be provided)
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
Knowledge of and interest in local flora and fauna
Possess a valid Ontario Class-G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
Other Skills and Assets:
Effective working independently
Ability to develop and deliver professional presentations and reports
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
GIS and statistics
Working Conditions:
Working hours will total 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday inclusive, with the additional requirement of evening meetings and occasional work on weekends. Some flexibility can be expected.
