Overview

Position Overview: The Forestry Technician works under the direction of the Restoration Supervisor focusing on Forestry Services, as part of Watershed Stewardship Services at Maitland Conservation. This includes working closely with landowners, community groups and other partners to complete various restoration projects across the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

General Program Delivery

  • Work with rural landowners and community groups to develop and implement planting plans related to tree and shrub planting. Plantings include windbreaks, shelterbelts, riparian buffers, afforestation and reforestation
  • Conduct site visits and provide technical advice to landowners completing planting projects on their property including species selection, planting density, proper planting techniques
  • Create planting plans using ArcGIS, inputting site location, conditions, landowner contact, description of planting, species required, spacing, type of stock, and total number of plants.
  • Maintain communication with landowners on project status, funding opportunities, planting plans, etc.
  • Obtain pricing from contractors conducting planting on behalf of landowners
  • Work with tree planting contractors and oversee tree planting projects
  • Research funding opportunities for landowners to help offset costs of projects
  • Deliver and promote tree/shrubs planting programs
  • Conduct survival assessments to improve future project success
  • Complete plantings to meet specific project deliverables
  • Prepare and present project applications to Review Committees, conduct final inspections, process Expense Claim Forms and calculate final grant for project funding
  • Update spreadsheets and database with project details using Microsoft Access and ArcGIS
  • Help deliver Tree and Shrub Sale program
  • Develop and sustain partnerships with local organizations
  • Create content for social media posts related to Forestry Services, including tree planting and forest management
  • Assisting with related tasks in flooding or potential flooding events
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, ecology or a related discipline
  • Knowledge and understanding of forestry practices, silviculture, restoration, agricultural practices and resource management principles.
  • Minimum of 2-years experience related to position responsibilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS, air photo interpretation, GPS units and mapping
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, and under minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid Class “G” Drivers License within the Province of Ontario or equivalent
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Experience completing other restoration projects is considered an asset

Working Circumstances:

  • Normal working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
  • A hybrid option incorporating a mixture of in-office and remote work is available.
  • May be required to adjust working hours to meet workplan and Authority needs.
  • May require limited evening and weekend work for flood related emergencies and special events

Desired starting Date: ASAP

Contract Length: 8-9 months (until March 31st, 2026), with possibility of extension

Wage Range: $31.47-$36.23 per hour dependent on experience (based on 37.5 hours/week)

Location: Maitland Conservation Administration Office – Wroxeter, ON
