The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is currently accepting applications for a full-time, 43-month contract position of Coastal Resilience Specialist. Maitland Conservation is a community-based organization dedicated to providing leadership to protect and enhance local water, forests and soil. Our area of jurisdiction covers the watersheds of the Maitland, Nine Mile and Eighteen Mile Rivers, along with smaller watersheds along the Lake Huron shoreline.
Location: Maitland Conservation Administration Office in Wroxeter, ON and throughout the watershed
Desired Starting Date: September 9, 2024
1) Primary Duties
- Attend events, meetings, public workshops etc. as a representative of Maitland Conservation’s nearshore projects, and present updates and next steps
- Undertake project administration including budget tracking and invoicing, report drafting, and file organization
- Active communications with the public and public agencies surrounding Maitland Conservation’s nearshore projects and general role with respect to the shoreline
- Prepare and deliver background information, updates, terms of reference, etc. for Littoral Cell Technical Committee
- Preparing and completing background reviews, case studies (including locating and selecting case studies), and policy summaries
- Support our partners’ needs in delivering on the nearshore projects (provision of time, information, and assistance to consultants, indigenous partners, Conservation Ontario, municipal partners and others)
- Support other contributors to the projects (graduate students and faculty working in partnership with Maitland Conservation)
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on Nature-based Solutions, Shoreline Management, Coastal Processes, and issues facing the Great Lakes
- Monitor project progress against workplan(s) and deliverable schedules
- Responsible for reviewing shoreline reconnaissance flight photos; looking for significant changes, failures, newly eroded areas, and example images to include in report and outreach material
2) Secondary Duties
- Support Planning & Regulations and Stewardship staff in contributing to the success of Maitland Conservation’s nearshore projects
- Support Maitland Conservation Administration staff with tracking financial activities as they relate to the nearshore projects
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Strong understanding and experience in project management and tracking
- A working knowledge of Conservation Authorities
- Technical understanding of nearshore environments, especially coastal processes
- Understanding of principles of community engagement and communication
- Strong interpersonal skills for communication with the public
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Computer Skills:
- Strong computer skills, including air photo interpretation, word processing, e-mail, internet research, file management, databases.
- Familiarity with geographical information systems (ArcGis).
Communication Skills / Knowledge:
- Effective report writing skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong presentation, telephone, and communication skills.
- Understanding of facilitation, conflict resolution and collaborative management techniques.
- Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary group environments.
Qualifications and Experience:
- University degree or college diploma in coastal geomorphology, coastal engineering, geography with coastal emphasis, environmental studies or planning.
- 3 – 4 years of experience in program/project management, in a relevant field
- Valid drivers licence.
Working Circumstances:
- Normal working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
- May be required to work certain weekends to facilitate stakeholder meetings
- A hybrid option incorporating a mixture of in-office and remote work is available.
- May be required to adjust working hours to meet workplan and Authority needs.
Wage Range: $37.45 – $40.30 per hour (based on 37.5 hours/week) plus benefits and pension plan.
