The Organization
Since its inception in 1928, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the Métis within Alberta. The MNA is led by a democratically elected Provincial Council, comprised of a Provincial President, a Vice-President, and six regional Presidents and Vice-Presidents. The Opportunity
The Métis Nation of Alberta is recruiting for a full-time Sustainability Project Coordinator (PC) based in the Provincial Office in Edmonton. The successful candidate will provide project management and support for the MNA Environment and Climate Change Team in climate leadership, energy, and sustainability initiatives. The ideal candidate will be a team player who is able to work with staff, MNA institutions, and citizens across the province. The PC will have an understanding and experience in sustainability initiatives and reporting, including energy management, renewable energy, energy efficiency, water use and waste reduction, and sustainable transportation.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Climate Leadership, the Sustainability Project Coordinator will support MNA institutions with tools to set clear, measurable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, in alignment with the MNA’s emissions reduction targets. Work will include supporting MNA institutions with resources, skills, and expertise in development and implementation of climate action plans, including support in setting, tracking, and accomplishing their GHG emissions reduction targets.
Duties required of this position:
- Assist in planning and implementation of sustainability projects and initiatives throughout all stages: concept, design, proposal, implementation, and reporting.
- Create, maintain, and enhance ongoing inventory of GHG emissions using industry standard energy and sustainability reporting tools, such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager, RETScreen Expert, or equivalent.
- Draft funding applications for relevant programs to secure funding for sustainability initiatives and projects.
- Review and manage obligations under funding agreements and contracts.
- Convene and chair MNA-Affiliates Climate Table meetings where the MNA shares potential sustainability opportunities with MNA affiliate institutions and assists with their respective implementations of sustainability efforts.
- Seek out potential project partnerships (including consultants and contractors), draft scopes of work, evaluate proposals, and provide recommendations to management staff on appropriate resources to be able to meet goals of projects and initiatives.
- Develop and maintain constructive working relationships and partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders, including other MNA departments, project partners, contractors, governments, and businesses.
- Draft progress reports for a variety of stakeholders, including government, funders, MNA citizenship, and MNA leadership, including greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy production reports.
- Assist in identifying, prioritizing, and implementing actions to decrease the energy use at MNA facilities.
- Assist in the development of Métis-specific models, policies, and plans that pertain to environment and climate change.
- Assist in coordinating and conducting community engagements related to environment and climate change, including presenting, facilitating, recording, and reporting on sessions.
Skills & Competencies
- Experience with sustainability projects and initiatives, including tracking, reduction, and reporting efforts pertaining to energy management, renewable energy (with an emphasis on solar), energy efficiency, and other sustainability areas (waste, water, transportation).
- Experience with grant/funding proposals, work plans, and budgeting.
- Experience in GHG emissions quantification and/or verification using relevant protocols and standards.
- Experience with energy benchmarking and energy benchmarking software (e.g., RETScreen, EnergyStar Portfolio Manager) an asset.
- Experience working in government or non-profits an asset.
- Excellent report writing skills, and the ability to produce professional documents and presentations.
- Exceptional listening, verbal, and written communication skills, and an ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
- Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems.
- Excellent analytical thinking and execution skills.
- A proven ability to deal with a high volume of work in a complex environment with multiple demands and critical timelines.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability.
- Strong cultural and political sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to deal with confidential information.

- Ability to work with a team or independently.
- Knowledge of Métis rights, history, culture, and people an asset.
- Knowledge of the Alberta utilities market and renewable energy industry an asset.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Alternative Energy, or related).
- Minimum two years of related work experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Relevant credentials and/or certifications will be considered assets.
Other Requirements
- Position will be based in Edmonton. Occasional in-office work will be required. Applicants outside of Edmonton within Alberta may be considered.
- Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends.
- Some travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional less frequent out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
- Must have a driver’s license and an operational vehicle.
