This position works closely with other seed testing staff and in association with members of other departments to deliver results critical to the success of the Tree Seed Centre.
The stand-alone Tree Seed Centre operates as a geographically separated arm of the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch (FIRM). As well as being a processing and research facility, the Tree Seed Centre serves as the provincial cone and seed repository for the purposes of reforestation as well as an ex situ gene conservation bank in the event of catastrophic losses caused by fire, pests or extreme climate change. For over 60 years, the Tree Seed Centre’s mission has been “Excellence in Cone and Seed Services”. The Tree Seed Centre is designated as Mission Critical within the Ministry.
The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development of British Columbia has a mandate to manage specified Crown land and resources in a manner that embraces the economic, environmental and social goals of government. As part of this Ministry, the mission of the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch is to enhance the value, resilience and conservation of BC’s forest genetic resources. FIRM conducts research to identify the potential growth, health and adaptability of BC’s tree species. This scientific information guides the establishment of Ministry and private seed orchards and the Chief Forester’s Standards for seed use. FIRM manages six seed orchards, two research stations and the Tree Seed Centre, where all seed used for Crown land reforestation is registered, tested, stored and distributed.
