Vegetation Specialist
NRSI is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Vegetation Specialist with a minimum of 3 years of experience (5 years preferred) to join NRSI’s Calgary office. This position is intended to be a full time/permanent position. The target start date is April 20, 2020, but the exact date is flexible.
Job Description
This position provides a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to join a leading environmental consulting firm, with established clientele, in our Calgary office. The successful applicant will be integral in coordinating and implementing biological services related to a wide variety of project types, including at proposed renewable energy facilities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The applicant will work collaboratively with other NRSI team members, both in Calgary and other Canadian offices. Primary responsibilities are expected to include: designing and leading vegetation field programs, including rare plant surveys, vegetation community surveys, and wetland assessments, entering and analyzing data, completing impact assessments, recommending mitigation measures, and preparing comprehensive reports. Travel to NRSI’s Head Office in Waterloo, Ontario will be required on occasion.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
Design and implementation of vegetation monitoring programs;
Participation in wildlife surveys;
Data entry and analysis of potential ecological impacts;
Preparation of detailed reports following applicable regulations and policies;
Knowledge and familiarity with provincial and federal policies and legislation;
Attendance at client and agency meetings, industry conferences, and public information sessions;
Preparation of detailed proposals, budgets, and work programs;
Recommendation of site-specific mitigation measures and opportunities to minimize potential impacts;
Highly motivated individual comfortable working independently;
Willingness and the ability to travel and conduct regular multi-day field monitoring exercises, sometimes in remote locations; and
Willingness and the ability to conduct field work over potentially long hours, early mornings, late nights, occasional weekends, and a variety of weather and environmental conditions (insects, diverse terrain, seasonal temperatures, etc.).
Qualifications
Candidates for this position should have applied experience working within Alberta and/or Saskatchewan, including specific experience designing and implementing vegetation studies. The successful applicant will have experience leading complex ecological tasks as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including coordinating multi-season field studies, preparation of comprehensive monitoring reports, assessing potential impacts and making appropriate recommendations for mitigation measures to minimize identified impacts.
The successful applicant will have:
A B.Sc. in Biology or Environmental Sciences, Technical Diploma in Natural Resources or Environment Management, or similar degree demonstrating technical knowledge and/or training;
Designation, or immediate eligibility, as a Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) or Biologist in Training in Alberta;
Minimum of 3 years, preferably 5 years, of environmental consulting experience in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan;
Excellent vegetation identification skills, including demonstrated experience conducting rare plant surveys;
Knowledge and familiarity with provincial and federal guidelines that apply to proposed developments, especially renewable energy projects;
Experience with multiple aspects of project management and implementation, including field monitoring, reporting, and impact assessments; and,
Experience preparing proposals, project schedules, and budgets.
Experience designing and implementing monitoring programs within other disciplines (e.g. birds, wetlands, bats, amphibians) will be considered an asset to this position.
Experience with business development activities, such as identifying and reviewing new opportunities, preparation of proposals and budgets, and contacting potential clients will be an asset.
Salary
The remuneration package includes salary commensurate on experience, profit sharing, performance bonuses, professional development fund, a full benefit package and RRSP contribution plan.
