Avian Biologist
This position provides a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to join a leading environmental consulting firm, with established clientele, in our Calgary office. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, NRSI employees are working remotely from home, and therefore applicants based outside of Calgary (preferably in southern Alberta or Saskatchewan) will be considered. The successful applicant will be integral in coordinating and implementing biological services related to a wide variety of project types, including at proposed and/or operational renewable energy facilities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The applicant will work collaboratively with other NRSI team members. Primary responsibilities are expected to include: designing and leading avian field work, sometimes in remote locations, as well as conducting amphibian, reptile, mammal and other wildlife monitoring programs, entering and analyzing data, and preparing detailed technical reports.
Specific Job Expectations:
· Design and implementation of avian monitoring programs, including bird migration, breeding bird surveys, and surveys targeting Sensitive Species (e.g., Sharp-tailed Grouse, Burrowing Owl, etc.);
· Assistance with other wildlife, vegetation, and wetland assessments;
· Data entry and analysis of potential ecological impacts;
· Preparation of detailed technical reports;
· Knowledge and familiarity with applicable provincial and federal guidelines and monitoring protocols;
· Contributions to proposals, budgets, and work programs;
· Highly motivated individual comfortable working independently;
· Willingness and the ability to travel and conduct regular multi-day field monitoring exercises, sometimes in remote locations; and
· Willingness and the ability to conduct field work over potentially long hours, early mornings, late nights, occasional weekends, and a variety of weather and environmental conditions (insects, diverse terrain, seasonal temperatures, etc.).
The start date for this position is considered flexible, with a target start date of early April, to coincide with early bird migration surveys.
Qualifications
Candidates for this position should have demonstrated experience leading bird surveys and should be comfortable with visual and auditory identification of bird species found in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The successful applicant will have experience leading complex ecological tasks as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and be comfortable working independently and managing their time efficiently.
The successful applicant will have:
· A B.Sc. in Biology or Environmental Sciences, Technical Diploma in Natural Resources or Environment Management, or similar degree demonstrating technical knowledge and/or training;
· Minimum of 1 year, preferably 3 years, of experience leading avian surveys, preferably in Alberta and/or Saskatchewan,
· Excellent avian identification skills visually and by ear, for all major groups of bird species in Alberta and Saskatchewan;
· Experience conducting migration and breeding bird surveys;
· Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, communication, and time management skills; and
· Experience analyzing data and writing detailed technical reports.
Experience implementing monitoring programs within other disciplines (e.g., bats, amphibians, vegetation surveys, wetlands, rare plant inventories) will be considered an asset to this position.
Position Type: Full-time contract
Duration: Up to 7 months (April – October)
Location: Flexible, preferably southern Alberta or Saskatchewan
Mandatory Requirements: Valid driver’s licence
Preferred Qualifications: Standard First Aid and CPR certification and use of a personal vehicle
Salary: $23-27/hour (commensurate on experience)
