Aquatic Biologist / Project Biologist
Natural Resource Solutions Inc. (NRSI) is an environmental consulting firm located in Waterloo, Ontario. NRSI is a well-respected firm that focuses on technical excellence in the field of ecology for a wide range of projects across Canada, including land developments, renewable energy, natural heritage planning, ecological restoration, research and monitoring, and species assessments and recovery strategies.
NRSI is currently looking to hire a qualified individual to support senior and mid-level staff with fisheries type tasks.
Position Type: Full-time Permanent Position [approximately 40 hours per week]. A 3-month probationary period to assess performance and on-going work availability.
Start Date: April 2022
Location: Waterloo, Ontario (fieldwork throughout Ontario)
Key Requirements: A valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and ability to work remotely.
Salary Range: $24-30/hour [commensurate on training and experience] *Permanent staff also receive additional compensation through annual profit sharing, benefits, Professional Development and Equipment funds and RRSP matching.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a project manager or advisor, the qualified person will be responsible for:
Background information and reviews;
Client and agency liaison;
Lead role in the completion of aquatic habitat assessments and fisheries assessments, including fish community, freshwater mussel community, benthic invertebrate and water quality sampling;
Data interpretation, analysis, and summarization;
Impact assessment and evaluation of ecological significance and sensitivity;
Report writing;
Lead or supporting role in proposal development, including workplan and budget development; and
Other tasks as needed dependent on skills, interests, and project requirements.
Requirements
· A technical diploma or University degree in ecology/biology/Env. Sciences or demonstrated technical knowledge and/or training will also be considered;
· At least 2 to 5 years of experience as a lead biologist (preference for experience with environmental consulting);
· Valid driver’s license and insurance eligibility;
· Due to necessary precautions associated with COVID-19, access to a personal vehicle and the ability to work remotely is also a requirement;
· Identification of fish, mussels, and aquatic plants. Identification of other plants and wildlife is an asset;
· Working and being outdoors for potentially long hours, in a variety of weather conditions, including camping in remote settings;
· Strong organizational and time management abilities;
· Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work;
· Physical fitness, as field work for this position will be highly physical.
· Clear and effective communication skills, both written and orally; and
· Must have pleasure craft operator card.
Assets
The following skills and experience are considered an asset:
· Experience with Environmental Impact Studies, Environmental Assessments, and Species at Risk Screenings;
· Understanding of Provincial and Federal fisheries legislation, policies and guidelines;
· Familiarity with natural heritage policies, legislation, and guidelines (e.g., Provincial Policy Statement, Significant Wildlife Habitat Technical Guide, Official Plans); and
· Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification;
· Experience boating and trailering;
· Valid backpack electrofishing certification; and
· Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol training.
