Ecosystem Restoration Specialist
As the leading private land conservation organization in the country, The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) will double our impact over the next decade to address the growing challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change. As part of this work, NCC is seeking an Ecosystem Restoration Specialist to work with Senior leaders in the organization to develop, within the context of NCC’s strategic plan, an organization-wide restoration framework.
This is a 6-month, term contract from September 2021 until January 30th, 2022 with the possibility for extension as the project enters the next phase of implementation.
The successful candidate will report to the Vice President of Conservation Policy and Planning and will collaborate with senior staff in the national office and the regional offices.
The candidate will:
• Define NCC’s ecological restoration goals and impact
• Describe the measures for impact reporting
• Articulate principles for restoration
• Determine how to integrate restoration goals into NCC’s existing property management planning framework
• Define criteria and parameters for how restoration projects are selected and prioritized
• Develop a restoration data management plan
• Recommend efficient means to implement plans via using best available information, contractors, partnerships, volunteers etc.
• Establish restoration monitoring and management protocols
• Work to ensure all steps are developed in ethical space with Indigenous Peoples, including appropriate respect for Indigenous Peoples’ rights, knowledge, and responsibilities regarding the ecological and cultural diversity of their traditional territories.
• Create a 3-year operating budget
The successful candidate will also work with NCC staff to promote and celebrate the UN Decade of Ecological Restoration.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
• MSc education in ecology, biology or environmental studies/science or specialized restoration degrees
• At least 5 years direct experience with ecological restoration
• Experience (preferred), or at minimum familiarity with, using the Principles and Guidelines for Ecological Restoration in Canada’s Protected Areas (Canada Parks) and the International Principles & Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration, 2nd Edition (IUCN)
• Experience collaboratively developing restoration program vision and direction
• Project management skills
• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Eagerness to engage in developing the work in Ethical Space
Location:
Candidates can be based anywhere in Canada and work remotely.
