Conservation and Interpretive Centre Coordinator

POSITION TITLE: Conservation and Interpretive Centre Coordinator
LOCATION: JOHNSON’S MILLS, NB and home office near the NB / NS border
NO. OF POSITIONS: 1
Work Week: 37.5 hours per week
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing NCC’s seasonal Johnson’s Mills Shorebird Interpretive Centre, overseeing site management and visitor interpretation services. This unique facility welcomes people who visit every summer to watch the vast flocks of shorebirds that temporarily stop here to rest and feed before their migration south. Johnson’s Mills is a truly special place and can see as many as a quarter of a million birds each year. Outside of the Interpretive Centre season you will be supporting conservation action in the Chignecto Isthmus region in NB and NS. You will coordinate multi-partner initiatives to maintain and enhance terrestrial connectivity, and to protect and recover species at risk and their associated habitats.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise 4 interpretive centre staff, including early-season training, mentoring and scheduling
- Manage all daily operations of the Interpretive Centre, including pre-season facility set up and day-to-day maintenance
- Oversee community relations and interact with the public to ensure that visitors do not disturb roosting birds at high tide and conduct daily counts of shorebirds and monitor raptor activity in the area
- Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with ENGOs, Indigenous communities, and government agencies to advance conservation actions
- Assist with reporting on conservation actions and funding grant deliverables
- Assist with communications, media and outreach events
Required Skills and Attributes: This posting is targeted to someone possessing the following skills and abilities:
- Experience in managing a small staff, overseeing the operation of a public facility, or supervising / training volunteers
- Excellent oral communication and demonstrated intrapersonal skills
- Comfortable speaking in front of the public and doing media interviews
- Demonstrated ability to build lasting relationships with partners / collaborators
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Able to work with little supervision; with a strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations
- Must be prepared to work flexible hours at times and work in rural areas
- Standard First Aid – Level C CPR first-aid certification
- Valid driver’s licence; own reliable transportation
The following additional skills and abilities would be assets:
- Bilingual (French and English) preferred
- Strong bird identification skills; other ecological fieldwork experience
- Experience in interpretation (park or tourist attraction)
Terms of Employment:
- This is a full-time 26-week (May – October) position with potential to extend to year-round contract. Will include weekend and evening work
- Starting salary will be between $20-22/hour
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- *Position requires work on site at Johnson’s Mills NB between May and September. Johnson’s Mills is approximately 30 km from Sackville, NB
