Ecological Technician
Summary of Duties
The Ecological Technician provides professional advice related to ecological principles, landscape ecology, and planning, complex impact assessment, aquatic/terrestrial flora and fauna identification, restoration and mitigation, and their practical applications. Supporting the Planning and Regulations Division by providing ecological review for Permit applications and Planning Act applications, this position works with internal and external clients to maintain, enhance, protect and conserve the biological diversity and integrity of Niagara’s watershed resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
(a) Reviews Planning Act applications, proposals under the Environmental Assessment Act applications, and Permit applications to ensure conformity with NPCA ecological principle and policies
(b) Provides review and scoping of Environmental Impact Studies
(c) Provides environmental advice into any violations of Ontario Regulation 155/06 as well a conducing site visits to assess ecological impacts of works within Regulated areas.
(d) Assists with processing Permit applications pursuant to Regulation 155/06
(e) Conducts follow up site inspections of issued work permits to ensure compliance
(f) Converses and communicates with customer’s in a clear, concise manner, ensuring understanding of ecological concepts and how they apply to related policy
Qualifications
- Post-Secondary education in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline
- Three years’ experience related to policy interpretation and implementation within the ecological field
- Ability to review, interpret and implement legislated policies
- Southern Ontario Wetland Evaluation System certification
- Ecological Land Classification Certification an asset
- Strong customer service and negotiation skills
Salary Range: Union Grade 5 – $34.19-40.22 per hour (2020 rate)
Location: NPCA Main Office-250 Thorold Rd W, Welland; with travel within the watershed
