Conservation Stewardship Technician

Currently, we are looking to fill the following vacancy:
Conservation Stewardship Technician
• Temporary, full-time position (approx. 2 year contract)
Reporting to the Natural Heritage Manager, this new position will work to conserve, inventory, restore, monitor and steward the Northumberland County Forest. The position will connect and work with the Natural Heritage team including the Forestry Trails Coordinator and the Forestry Technician.
You will perform restoration, inventory, invasive species management, monitoring, SAR surveys, and connect with and oversee volunteers. Bylaw enforcement of the Forest Use and Weed By-law will also occur as required.
Qualifications & skills:
As a minimum, you have:
- 3 years practical experience in restoration, stewardship and conservation;
- Skills and knowledge normally consistent with a post-secondary degree or diploma in the area(s) of conservation, resource management, ecology or related science;
- Experience/knowledge of the Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario;
- Ability to identify common Ontario plants, wildlife and vegetation communities as well as experience using identification keys;
- Ability to work well within team structure;
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
- Demonstrated experience in GIS;
- Demonstrated proficiency in navigational skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and air photo interpretation;
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions and on various terrain;
- Pesticide exterminator license would be an asset;
- Experience using common stewardship equipment including all-terrain vehicle, chainsaw, brushsaw, pickup trucks and utility trailers;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills that allow you to work well within a team environment while troubleshooting and problem solving;
- Ability to multi-task and establish priorities;
- Excellent time management and project management skills;
- Ability to work well under pressure and a strong attention to detail;
- Highly motivated with the ability to work independently;
- Willingness to work flexible hours and accommodate occasional unplanned requests.
A valid Class G driver’s license with a clean abstract and access to a personal vehicle is required. A 3 year uncertified driver’s record obtained from Service Ontario must be submitted with your resume. Resumes submitted without an acceptable driver’s abstract will not be reviewed.
