Stewardship Coordinator – Operations
The Nova Scotia Nature Trust was created to protect and conserve our province’s incredible natural legacy. They save outstanding natural areas through land conservation. They use a strategic, science-driven approach to identify and protect the most threatened, unique, and significant natural areas for nature and for future generations to enjoy. The Nature Trust stewards over 19,000 acres of land across Nova Scotia, and through their ambitious Twice the Wild campaign, aim to double their protected space for nature by 2024.
On behalf of our client, we are currently recruiting for a Stewardship Coordinator – Operations to join their team of dedicated professionals on their Conservation team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This role is a 10-month contract opportunity.
Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Stewardship Coordinator – Operations leads the development and implementation of an annual program of stewardship activities on all Nature Trust conservation lands. This role supervises two positions: Stewardship Technician and Stewardship Assistant, and has the following responsibilities:
Stewardship Responsibilities:
• Ensures integration of best practices into all aspects of stewardship program (including compliance with Canadian land trust standards and practices)
• Conducts baseline studies, writes baseline documentation reports and ensures additional stewardship program resources are utilized in the completion of baselines
• Writes, assists with the completion or allocates resources to ensure the completion of stewardship plans and related stewardship documents
• Plans, delivers and ensures the completion of an annual program of property monitoring and reporting
• Plans and delivers activities on Nature Trust conservation lands that support property or regional stewardship objectives.
• In collaboration with the Conservation Biologist, plans and leads ecological restoration projects.
• Maintains and enhances the relationships/communications with conservation easement property owners.
• Builds relationships and communicates with neighbours, local governments, community leaders and others to reduce threats/increase awareness, educate and encourage support for stewardship efforts.
• Works closely with the Stewardship Coordinator – Policy and Planning, to ensure annual stewardship program goals and objectives are achieved.
• Supports and delivers enforcement activities with guidance from Director of Conservation
• In collaboration with the Stewardship Coordinator – Policy and Planning, coordinates visitor and recreation planning/management including, but not limited to, trails, access, signage, recreation management.
• Provides subject matter expertise and guidance to Nature Trust committees and Board.
Communication Responsibilities:
• In collaboration with the communications team, assists with the development and helps to deliver communications, education and marketing materials and tactics to support the stewardship program and broader NSNT programs (including philanthropy)
• Develops, trains and oversees the Property Guardians program, including volunteer management (and coordination of other field volunteers/partners), with support from the Stewardship Technician and the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
• Assists with the delivery of the Bird’s Eye View program.
• Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships to support stewardship activities and enhance capacity
Administrative/Technical Responsibilities:
• Provides mapping and GIS resources to support stewardship
• Oversees and administers information management and tracking systems including Landscape stewardship database and app; stewardship records, tracking systems, templates and reports
• Acts as the lead administrator for the Landscape stewardship database
Leadership/Mentoring Responsibilities:
• Delegates work to the Stewardship Technician and Stewardship Assistant as needed
• Provides feedback on work and coaches the stewardship team
• Provides training, guidance and feedback to the volunteers working in the stewardship program
• Oversees and ensures Health and Safety requirements are met for all staff and volunteers working in area of responsibility
Financial Responsibilities:
• Carries out required activities within delegated authority and in compliance with Nature Trust financial policies and procedures.
As the ideal candidate, you possess experience working in a conservation role, along with post-secondary training in conservation, ecology, biology or related fields. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, however. Ability to be extremely organized while managing a team consisting of Nature Trust staff as well as Property Guardian volunteers will be key to success in this role. It is essential you are able to work independently while maintaining team relationships, while also being able to be flexible and work in an unstructured environment. Ability to competently use the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, and to learn to use the stewardship database, Landscape, as well as a valid driver’s license, is required.
Other Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
• GIS capabilities, including the ability to use ArcGIS to create and modify maps, extract data and inform decisions.
• Ability to identify common Nova Scotia terrestrial species and the ability to use keys and guides to identify unknown species.
• Ability to navigate extremely varied terrain on foot, over long distances, using GPS or compass.
• Ability to kayak or canoe, or the willingness to learn.
Working Conditions:
This position requires a combination of office and field work. During field season, you will be required to travel for between two and five days during most weeks. Evenings and weekends may sometimes be required for volunteer training, work parties or events. Fieldwork may require camping at or near worksites. Fieldwork takes place typically from the end of May to October. During the winter months most work is conducted in Nature Trust offices.
