Nova Scotia Programs Manager
Birds Canada is hiring a highly-motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills and conservation experience to oversee shorebird and conservation programs in Nova Scotia on a full-time basis (contingent on performance and funding). This is fully remote position based in Nova Scotia due to occasional travel in the region. This is a Level 4 position at Birds Canada (salary range $54,830/a- $76,500/a commensurate with training, experience, and tenure; plus health and dental benefits).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
The Nova Scotia Programs Manager reports to the Atlantic Director and will manage and develop stewardship programs and scientific strategies for shorebird conservation. They will also develop and maintain partnerships that strengthen coastal conservation. The Manager’s primary role will be to manage and provide strategic, adaptive program recommendations for the conservation of shorebirds in Nova Scotia, the Bay of Fundy, and the surrounding area. The Manager will work with program coordinators and partners to identify high priority conservation actions and guide implementation of key initiatives, including:
- Lead and participate in several multi-partner conservation initiatives in the Atlantic region such as Community-nominated Priority Places
- Use the Conservation Standards framework to inform and strengthen evidence-based decision making and increase effectiveness of monitoring and conservation actions for shorebirds
- Hire and manage program coordinators and seasonal staff
- Oversee monitoring and protection for endangered Piping Plover, working with a team of staff, partners, and volunteers to survey beaches, assess threats and collect plover population and productivity data
- Work with wildlife and habitat managers and government partners to determine and implement appropriate conservation actions for shorebirds and to address threats
- Provide strategic advice for outreach and education activities
- Lead funding applications and provide project reports to funders, partners and volunteers
- Evaluate program activities for effectiveness and impact in relation to program and organizational goals
- Identify and pursue opportunities to engage stakeholders, such as landowners, local businesses, town councils and other community members, in monitoring and stewardship activities
- Provide support and expertise to programming and strategic development of shorebird and coastal conservation goals within Birds Canada as a whole
- Other duties as assigned by Atlantic Director
EDUCATION
Masters of Science, Environmental Studies or a comparable field in addition to demonstrated knowledge of project coordination, volunteer management, stakeholder engagement and species at risk stewardship. Certification, training and experience leading processes using Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, or similar adaptive planning frameworks.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience with Conservation Standards, Miradi Software, and Miradi Online
- Experience developing and leading field-based conservation and stewardship programs
- Experience implementing research projects, including collecting and analysing data and writing reports
- Experience working with government agencies and diverse stakeholders, including private landowners, to deliver conservation projects
- Experience working with species at risk and/or priority species and habitats
- Knowledge of shorebird ecology, particularly Piping Plovers, and of coastal beach ecosystem processes
- Experience recruiting, training and managing volunteers
- Highly motivated with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft programs: MS Excel, Outlook, Word and Powerpoint
- Valid driver’s license
- This position requires a high degree of critical thinking and ability to make strategic recommendations
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of provincial and federal species at risk legislation
- Experience managing budgets and preparing funding proposals
- Experience leading outreach and education activities for diverse audiences
- Experience with using social media for outreach and project promotion
- Current First Aid Certification
