Ontario Nature is seeking a self-motivated committed individual for the position of Nature Reserves Coordinator for a one-year contract position starting in April 2020. The Nature Reserves Coordinator will coordinate several aspects of the Nature Reserves Program, including management planning, stewardship, fieldwork and research. The position will involve conducting detailed inventories of the ecosystems on each property, as well as organizing data, reporting on field work and developing management plans.
The ideal candidate is hard-working, highly organized, knowledgeable about conservation land management, species at risk biology and conservation, and has experience conducting research. The ability to lead and motivate a field work crew is required.

Principal Responsibilities:
- Coordinate data management and ensure data quality for the Nature Reserves Program.
- Coordinate stewardship, research and management planning.
- Coordinate nature reserve property and conservation easement inspections for threats, usage, species at risk monitoring, ecological land classification and, for easements, compliance monitoring.
- Assist with administrative duties including developing project budgets, tracking projects and grant deliverables, and contributing to fundraising plans and internal reports.
- Coordinate communications and outreach for the Nature Reserves Program including print and digital content.
- Contribute to the cultivation of partners and volunteers to achieve Nature Reserves Program goals and objectives.
- Assist with fundraising and donor relations including grant applications, budgets and funder reports.
- Maintain updated, well-organized files for the Nature Reserves Program, ensuring easy access for Ontario Nature staff.
- Assist with the supervision of interns and volunteers as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, resource management, ecology or a relevant field.
- Minimum three years relevant work experience or experience gained through an advanced degree.
- Good knowledge of Ontario’s flora and fauna with sound field identification skills and training in Ecological Land Classification and/or Vegetation Sampling Protocol.
- Relevant experience in field research and nature reserve management planning.
- Proficiency with all applications of Microsoft Office suite of programs including Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of Arc GIS and database software.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills including active listening.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently within a small team structure and collaboratively with partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work outdoors for extended periods in sometimes challenging conditions (e.g. high temperatures and humidity, heavy rain, dense bugs) and terrains.
- Sound navigational skills including experience with a field GPS unit and compass, and air photo interpretation.
- Current first aid and CPR certification.
- Valid class “G” driver’s license and ability to rent a vehicle in Ontario.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Desirable assets:
- Experience capturing and handling reptiles and amphibians
- Experience with fundraising and report writing
- Experience with the Species at Risk permitting process
- Experience conducting breeding bird surveys
Anticipated start date: Early April 2020
Duration of position: Full-time, 1-year contract (with potential for extension)
Salary Range: $38,000 – $45,000
Location: Ontario Nature Head Office – 214 King Street West, Suite 612, Toronto, ON
Working conditions: This job requires frequent travel across Ontario and frequent weekend and evening work. During these trips staff often camp or stay in rustic accommodations. The position requires the ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g. high summer temperatures and humidity, heavy rain) and terrains. The job can be physically demanding, including hiking, tree-planting, hole-digging, camping in uncomfortable conditions and lifting heavy objects (up to 40 lbs).
