THE ROLE
As a key member of the Outward Bound Canada leadership team, the Head of Eastern Canada is responsible for collaborating with other leaders to drive a positive growth mindset within the organization. All members of the leadership team are responsible for their own objectives, as well as supporting their colleagues in achieving their objectives. This is a team game, and the success of the organization will largely depend on a highly collaborative and supportive leadership team.
The Head of Eastern Canada will support a team of outdoor professionals in building capacity and delivering best-in-class programs. You are the face of Outward Bound Canada in Ontario and the Maritimes. In addition to being responsible for program implementation, the leader delivers a key role in supporting sales, outreach, and donor relations, in collaboration with your colleagues in Marketing, Development & Engagement.
WHAT WE OFFER
Location: Toronto or Minden / Haliburton Ontario preferred (other locations within the region may be accommodated for the right candidate). Hybrid work environment is well-established.
Travel: 20-30% of the year will require travel within Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience

OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT
● Contribute to the OBC leadership team, providing both strategic and tactical direction at team meetings and retreats and providing leadership and representation as required.
● Lead all aspects of program planning and delivery within the market. Collaborate on national and international programs as required.
● See that all programs are designed to maximize the quality of the Outward Bound process experienced by the students.
● Supervise and mentor regional managers and support their regional operations.
● Supervise and mentor outreach staff and guide their efforts in alignment with organizational strategy and within the mission.
● Responsible for decisions on locations (base and mobile operations). Oversee compliance to applicable legal and risk management standards. Ensure that facility-related costs are aligned with both budgetary expectations and the OBC strategic plan.
● Ensure annual financial and performance goals agreed upon are met.
● Ensure revenue targets are met or exceeded through a dynamic and effective balance of onboarding new clients and engagement of existing clients.
● Support the development, execution, and evaluation of annual operations planning.
● Identify and manage the resources, budgets, and people required to deliver a sustainable, responsibly managed, and high-quality program.
● Delivers approved training (with Head of Program)
● Drives local partnership development with schools and regional NGOs
● Maintain relationships with delivery partners, key clients, land managers, and other stakeholders as necessary to ensure high-quality program delivery
● Recruit instructor staff. Oversee manager team in the hiring, supervising, and mentoring field staff. Expand the development of the dynamic, engaged, and high-performing instructional team
● Oversee the development of effective logistics systems to support program delivery, ensuring effective integration of program resources and people, as well as anticipating and addressing emerging operational delivery issues.
● Monitor logistics, food, transportation, admissions, route planning, staffing, emergency response, curriculum and incident reporting plans, etc. to maintain appropriate risk management and oversight of safety systems.
● Be a key leader in maintaining positive and productive working relationships in the outdoor education community and maintain knowledge of key industry trends and changes in all operating locations
WHAT YOU BRING

▪ A visionary, inspirational leader, with a great understanding of social systems of power and commitment to changing dominant narratives.
▪ A process-oriented educator and trainer who has experience with youth and their social and emotional growth.
▪ Experience developing & implementing cross-team integrated processes
▪ An experienced outdoor educator would be a plus.
▪ Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
▪ Ten+ years of management and team-leading experience.
▪ Demonstrated effectiveness working with, understanding, and including people from diverse backgrounds, and a high level of knowledge regarding Indigenous worldviews.
▪ A passion for diversity; a leader with empathy, sympathy, and experience with the evolution of learning.
▪ Collaborative problem-solver.
▪ Highly skilled at conflict resolution and coaching others towards success.
▪ Depth of knowledge and skill in supporting youth through mental health and behavioral challenges is a strong asset. Socially and emotionally intelligent.
▪ Resilient, flexible, creative, and extremely adept at achieving tangible results while working in a dynamic, highly pressured, and often remote environment with minimum supervision.
REQUIREMENTS
● Fully vaccinated against Covid-19
● Clear Vulnerable Sector check
● Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract
● Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – If certification is not current, it must be certified within 3 months of joining.
Nice to have:
● Other industry certifications, such as Ropes Course Manager, Lifeguarding Certification (NLS or Bronze Cross), SRT.
