Position: National Safety Manager (Full-time)
Immediate Supervisor: Head of Program
Location: Home office, preferably close to one of our operating areas: Vancouver Island, Vancouver, Canmore/Calgary, Toronto, Huntsville
Start date: End of January, early February 2021.

ABOUT THE POSITION
As a National organization with regional operations across the country, it is crucial that alignment exists between the regions as it relates to program quality and safety. Reporting to the Head of Program, the National Safety Manager (NSM), will ensure that OBC’s safety and field risk management culture, practices, and policies are at an industry-leading standard and will be involved with program management and outreach.
The NSM will support the program team in ensuring that OBC is positioned to succeed in a highly complex operating environment, by ensuring that staff are kept up-to-date on a variety of relevant topics, such as Covid-19 pandemic response, climate change, wildfires, and mental health issues. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
National Safety Manager (80%)
- Maintain and update OBC’s Safety Policies and Procedures, and lead the dissemination and training efforts to support the implementation of those policies and procedures.
- Take the lead in developing analysis, new policies and procedures, and best practice documentation on emergent, novel and new operational risks (including Covid-19)
- Evaluate, improve and where applicable, standardize the risk management elements of the OBC staff training system
- Conduct and/or assist with Regional Safety Reviews, as defined by the OBC Risk Management Policy
- Lead the incident analysis process, in both an on-going manner and by authoring the Annual Field Safety and Risk Report
- Support the Head of Program to ensure that up-to-date National Crisis Protocol and Regional Emergency Plans are in place
- Support the Head of Program and Head of Marketing in seeking out external risk management outreach opportunities (teaching, consulting, and representing OBC at relevant conferences)
Program Management and Outreach (20%)
One key element of Outward Bound Canada’s value proposition is our standards and practice as it relates to Risk Management. As part of this role, the National Safety manager will leverage their background, skills, and expertise as support to partnership development. Activities to support this will include bringing a safety and risk management lens to the following:
- Participating in and supporting the development of presentations and proposals to prospective partners, prospective students, and their families
- As required by OBC participate in media interviews
- Maintain a strong presence with field staff, by course directing or instructing at least one course per year.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED
- Minimum 5-7 years’ experience working in the Outdoor Adventure Education sector, with a mix of field and management experience
- Formal education at the college or university level considered a strong asset.
- Highly proficient at technical writing and public speaking in English; French is an asset
- Proven record training and motivating staff
- Wilderness First Responder (80 hours)
- Proven ability to remain calm and bring focus and direction in emergency situations
- Must be able to generate results while working across teams in a highly dynamic and complex environment, with a minimum of supervision and direction
- Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Domestic travel and occasional international travel will account for up to 10% of time
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening required
