Vegetation Monitoring Assistant

Supervised by and reporting to the Program Scientist- Research Priorities, Partnerships & Monitoring, and working in a team environment with all program advisors, staff and volunteers, the Vegetation Monitoring Assistant is responsible for measuring and inventorying vegetation and assisting with insect collection and related duties, as required.
ELIGIBILITY
This is a paid position, under Government of Canada – Canada Summer Jobs Program (pending). Requirements of funding include:
- Participant must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Enrolled in a post-secondary program related to any of the environmental or biological sciences;
- Strong southern Ontario flora identification skills (clearly demonstrate this in your application);
- Willing and able spend long periods outdoors in all weather conditions;
- Comfortable working independently with little supervision;
- Able to recruit, manage, and retain volunteer support for field work;
- Proficiency in MS Excel and Access would be an asset;
- Previous fieldwork experience using Vegetation Sampling Protocol would be an asset;
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establishing field plots to inventory and measure vegetation (plant species, quantity, condition) using Vegetation Sampling Protocol;
- Installation and servicing of Malaise traps to sample insects (as time allows);
- Laboratory work sorting and identifying collected insects (as time allows);
- Complete data entry tasks;
- Prepare a report on findings from vegetation sampling;
- Assist with rare events and other duties as required;
- Attend regular staff meetings to report on progress and preliminary findings.
SALARY: $16/hr, 40 hours a week for 16 weeks, pending approval of funding
