Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is a world-renowned institution dedicated to plant conservation, education and garden beauty. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Horticulturist – Plant Health Care and Turf Maintenance to join our team and contribute to the enhancement of our diverse gardens and green spaces.

Position Overview:

The Horticulturist – Plant Health Care and Turf Maintenance will oversee the maintenance and health of turf areas, implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plans, and ensure the effective operation of horticultural tools and systems. This role is essential in maintaining RBG’s standards for excellence in garden management, ensuring an optimal visitor experience while promoting sustainable horticultural practices.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Oversee the maintenance and health of turf areas, ensuring high standards of care.
Develop and implement IPM plans, monitor plant health, identify pests, and establish thresholds to recommend effective solutions.
Maintain records of pest monitoring, plant health assessments, and pest management solutions.
Assist the Horticulture team with the installation and maintenance of garden displays.
Maintain, service, and ensure the efficient operation of horticultural tools, systems, and machinery.
Monitor irrigation systems for optimal water use and distribution. Track maintenance schedules and report operational inefficiencies.
Coordinate daily work activities and foster a culture of teamwork, providing technical guidance to gardeners and seasonal staff.
Collaborate with management and horticulture staff to maintain gardens and turf areas for year-round shows, events, and revenue-generating activities.
Ensure a safe environment for visitors, staff, and volunteers.

Qualifications & Requirements:

In-depth knowledge and experience with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, principles, and practices.
Advanced knowledge of turf management techniques, including aeration, line trimming, irrigation, overseeding, and nutrient management.
Practical experience in garden planning, installation, and maintenance with diverse plant materials.
Strong project planning and time management skills, with the ability to schedule turf management and IPM activities effectively.
Problem-solving skills to analyze and adapt work activities to changing conditions.
Ability to identify major plant, insect, and disease genera, understanding growth characteristics and life cycles.
Experience using and maintaining landscape management tools and motorized vehicles with attachments.
Extensive experience in providing technical oversight, training, and motivation to staff and volunteers.
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Proficiency in maintaining records and reports using digital tools, including Microsoft Office.
Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License with an excellent driving record.
Valid Ontario Pesticide Land & Structural Exterminator License or the ability to obtain valid licensing in an agreed upon timeframe.
